    weak, but a violation nonetheless.

RALEIGH -- N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe committed an NCAA secondary violation in discussing a basketball prospect, an NCSU athletics department official said today.
Jon Fagg, associate athletic director for compliance, said the violation would be reported to the ACC office. Reports on secondary violations are sent once each quarter to the NCAA for review, Fagg said.

Fagg said the violation was inadvertent. In a press conference last Friday, Lowe was asked about C.J. Leslie, a sophomore at Raleigh's Word of God High who has committed to play for the Pack. Lowe said under NCAA rules he was not allowed to say a recruit's name. Later, he added, "One guy you mentioned, who committed, he's very athletic. He's playing extremely well, and he's going to get better."

NCAA rules prohibit a coach from commenting on the playing ability of a prospect, Fagg said.

Fagg said there are level-one and level-two secondary violations and that Lowe's was a level-two violation. Punishment or penalties for level-two violations are prescribed by the individual schools, Fagg said. He would not say what Lowe's penalty would be.

"Level two violations are isolated, inadvertent violations that do not result in much of an advantage," Fagg said. "On level-two violations, the NCAA accepts whatever penalty we prescribe.

"Sidney did not intend to commit the violation. He thought he was doing the right thing."

Do you mean the ones that the KU compliance department gave him the OK to give, or some other ones?

Regardless, do you always try to explain mistakes away by pointing out someone else made one too, or do you limit that 1st grade logic to UNC?

Kinda OT, but whatever happened to the UNC thingy that was in the paper a couple months ago with some NBA players contacting potential recruits? Did that just go away or did something happen?
