Oh, Im cool now too, I know how to change someones name in a post.

Dont be mad that I made you look like a fool in evaluating DE's. Get over it. Im no expert and dont claim to be, unlike yourself, and youre pissed that I called you out on it, its ok. You dont like the guy because his school beats the shit out of EZU every year, get over it, he is a talented player.

Huh? When was this? Last thing I remember, you were lying in a transparent attempt to make Mario Williams look like he was having more of an impact than he was. Dude, you're a liar. You were caught lying over something on the internet. It doesn't get more pathetic than that.
Every school beats ECU, and I'm a Carolina fan anyway, dumbshit. I actually feel sorry for Mario because he'll never be able to live up to expectations (although the money makes up for that disappointment). Plus I've said all along that Manny Lawson was a much better player in college, so it's nothing against State, it's just an understanding that Williams is not a "great" defensive end.

It seemed to me the writing was on the wall about this time last year, and it was surprising. And considering HEnning's comments, the writing was on the wall a year ago.

I'm just bumming he's either a bust or is being wasted. It's another wasted pick, and it's in a position that Henning calls the 'Flag carrier' for his offense.

Anyway - here's hoping he stays. Imma take a shower.

I was at every morning practice, and he was one of the nicer players in terms of signing autographs and talking to fans. And I was fortunate enough to personally meet him. Him, Nate Salley, Colbert, and Basanez were probably the nicest guys there. But most other players were fan friendly, as well.

    Decision day for Panthers
Rookie Montgomery, others sweat final cut today

    STAN OLSON
    [email protected]

In NFL lingo, the Hawk gets you when your team tells you you've been cut from the roster. That will happen to almost a third of the players on every team in the league today, when rosters are reduced from 75 to a season-ready 53.

The Hawk's talons will tap 22 Carolina Panthers on their shoulders this morning. They'll be asked to turn in their playbooks and pack up their stuff. Montgomery, a rookie offensive lineman and a seventh-round draft pick from Virginia Tech, has done everything he can to avoid being among them.

He has played both center and guard through training camp, most recently filling in for injured starting right guard Evan Mathis in Carolina's final exhibition Thursday in Pittsburgh, and playing respectably into the fourth quarter. As the hawk circles, Montgomery is confident but not certain.

"When you do well in practice, they let you know," he said this week. "They also let you know when you don't do well. So as long as there are more compliments than other things said, you kind of get the gist of it that way, I guess.

"I feel good; I'll feel a lot better after final cuts."

So will a number of other Panthers considered "on the bubble." Guys with a chance to make the team, but none of the certainty that makes today just another day for the starters.

If positions are deep, good players can be squeezed off the roster.

Linebacker Keith Adams was signed as a free agent after starting 16 games at Philadelphia last season, but he is on the bubble.

Running back Eric Shelton, the team's No. 2 draft pick a year ago, might have already fallen off the bubble despite a decent performance Thursday.

There are others, of course; guys like safety Kevin McCadam, linebacker Vinny Ciurciu, running back Jamal Robertson, fullback Casey Cramer, wide receiver/punt return specialist Efrem Hill and defensive linemen Kindal Moorehead, Atiyyah Ellison and Tony Brown. Oh, and anyone in the battle for the third quarterback slot.

For such players, this morning's drive to Bank of America Stadium has to be nerve-wracking.

Despite his late draft selection, Montgomery is the type of player Carolina's coaches gravitate to.

The Panthers love versatility, and he played guard and center at Virginia Tech. He's done more of the same in training camp.

"They're kind of interchangeable -- if a guard goes down, I can play that; if a center goes down, I think I would be able to play that, too," he said.

Montgomery, who is 6-foot-3 and 312 pounds, has caught the eye of offensive coordinator Dan Henning.

"I think he's doing real well; he's in the competition," Henning said. "He's a solid performer, he plays with a very solid base, he's aggressive; he utilizes his ability well. He's come in here and he has not been overwhelmed, he knows what to do. And that's been impressive."

It has been an adjustment, of course, just as it is for every NFL rookie.

"You've got to put your working hat on every day," Montgomery said. "Especially with these (defensive) linemen, these linebackers, they're coming at you 100 miles an hour. If you blink, they're by you, so you've just got to be on your toes.

"The speed's different, but you also have to make sure your technical aspects as an offensive lineman are intact. You can't take a bad set; you can't have bad hand placement or anything like that."

When Montgomery has been beaten, he hears about it in film review, often to the accompaniment of chuckling veterans. But he seems to take it all in stride.

"As long as I'm putting somebody on their back, if I get put on my back once in a while, hey, it'll happen," he said.

I dont think he is a great DE either. I also think the Texans completely botched the draft, however, arguing he sucks because he doesnt have a lot of tackles in his rookie preseason is nonsense. Furthermore, if you look up his combine stats, he compares, at least physically, pretty comparably to Peppers.

That's not what I said. For one, I don't think he sucks. He's a solid player against the run and will occasionally get some sacks, so he's not a liability, he's just not a great DE and he might not even be "good." I'm saying that him not even sniffing the quarterback during heavy preseason action and not making any significant plays whatsoever in all that time is embarrassing. How can a #1 overall pick completely disappear all preseason long? That should never happen.
According to the combine, Mike Mamula was one of the best defensive ends in NFL history. Who, you ask? Exactly. Peppers was a terror in college, Mario was not.

Now go away permanently. You forever destroyed your credibility when you actually lied about something as stupid as Mario Williams' performance against Denver.
