I hope we hang on to him. We tend to go through a lot of running backs and he would be better than Goings or Robertson should we end up in another running back shortage. I would keep Hoover and Goings at fullback and then Foster, Williams and Shelton at tailback.

He looked better than Haynes or Robertson. Or Goings for that matter.

    I hope they keep him.

A lot of what happens to earn your spot is in practice. If he's still struggling with blocking and/or the gameplan, then that's going to show. Or if he's loafing. Or just not knowing the playbook despite having a year. I fully believe that the staff has a good reason to do what they do, even if there's not necessarily an obvious one. And even if we don't really agree with it.
Same with guys like King, and so on. You earn those jobs, you don't just get them.

I don't believe he'd actually be better than Goings until he showed that. He certainly should have more ability, but so should Ryan Leaf if you want to play that card. You gotta show it. Shelton did well in a practice game against shitplayers. Goings almost pulled a grand with a crap line against real teams.

Yeah, thats the thing about last night that's unsettling for me. I think our D is deeper than their D(at least the dl) and in practice (i'm quessing) he doesn't look as good.

It meant that you're wrong about his reason for looking good. Sure, he was playing against scrubs but he was also playing behind scrubs. But the whole point of actually watching the preseason games is to notice how a guy looks instead of just how many yards he gets. Shelton ran with more body lean last night and would get his pad level even lower in preparation for contact. He also did a good job of picking his holes and being assertive in cutting up into them. Shelton ran with more power and authority than he did last preseason, and that's why people were impressed.

    magnus:
I don't think you can pin it on him sucking in camp, though, especially since so many people have said he looked solid or better at Wofford. It's not like Haynes got many reps either. The problem was that Foster has never been a starter before, so he needed to be warmed up, and then we also needed to give plenty of carries to our first round pick. There weren't many left for a competition.

    Shelton runs for his job

Running back Eric Shelton took advantage of what might have been his last chance to play in a Carolina Panthers' uniform.

He rushed for 44 yards on 10 carries in the Panthers' 15-13 win against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

"I think I did pretty well for myself," he said. "That's the performance I've been waiting for."

It might have been too little too late for Shelton, who received an unflattering evaluation earlier in the week from offensive coordinator Dan Henning. The Panthers have to cut their roster to the regular-season maximum of 53 by Saturday.

Shelton gained 6, 7, 9 and 11 yards on his first four rushes in the third quarter. He later fumbled inside the Steelers' 10, but quarterback Brett Basanez recovered.

Shelton said he didn't know what his chances are of making the Panthers' roster but that "I'm going to be OK regardless."

The Panthers' 2005 second-round pick acknowledged that his play Thursday could encourage another team to pick him up if he's cut by the Panthers.

"There's always somebody out there that wants you," he said. "Every time you're on the field as coach (John) Fox would say, it's your resume."

Doesnt sound to me like someone who particularly cares about making this team.

So, assuming he makes the team, is it because of last night or was he already a lock in your opinion?

Probably in response to Henning's article blasting him yesterday. And what? No lies about phantom sacks today? I'm disappointed.

    curly:
He could still easily get cut because it's a numbers game and we have so many ahead of him. If we keep 5 RBs, then there is one spot open behind Foster, Williams, Goings, and Hoover. I still think that Robertson's special teams work has gotten him a place on the team, so I don't think Shelton sticks as a fifth. If we keep 6, then there are two spots between Robertson, Shelton, Cramer, and Haynes. Note that Henning praised Cramer and took a dump on Shelton in the press, for whatever that's worth.

So I honestly don't have the slightest clue if Shelton makes the team, I'm just glad he shut people up by playing well and presumably earned a paycheck from someone, even if it's not us.
