This is a doctrinal point that has been debated by theologians for a long time. I do not imagine you and I will answer it. I think in a way it is splitting hairs though. Neither of us really believes that you can deny God and sin all you want and go to heaven. You think you will lose your salvation and I think you never got saved because if you did you would not be able to do that over the long term because God would chasten you.

    It's in Matthew.

Chapter 5, Verse 32: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Proof that the thumpers live by one set of standards and preach another.

I thought that was the central theme in the split and that Protestants no longer believe that an annulment is required for people to remarry.

If it IS adultery, then why on earth would any church marry divorced people, as that would be inviting them to live in sin.

Maybe all divorced people need to say they were cheated on and that'd make it ok. :xyzthumbs

In many cases, I wouldn't disagree with you. I think that group may be the ones Jesus was referring to in Matthew 7:23 ("I never knew you...").

My personal take on works vs. grace is that no one can ever do enough works to 'earn' salvation. Rather, someone who has been saved by grace and indwelled with the Holy Spirit will be transformed (gradually) into the kind of person who will do good works because he wants to, not because he has to.

I honestly don't know. I haven't researched that much of church history yet.

    An EXCELLENT question.

I agree with that and I think that if you do not eventually show evidence of being a christian then you probably never got that indwelling.
