Doubt it, Clemson thinks it's a big shot school so it will likely go after a higher profile candidate. After all it's in the mightly ASheShe. Lutz has a degree from Clemson though. Depaul currently sucks so Purnell must of thought he had taken the football school as far as he could plus the money was probably more at Depaul. Depaul could be good, given its location, but that remains to be seen.

Depaul was a major power in the Meyer years but has been a total washout for 20 years or more. Depaul sits in Chicago which has a lot of players although a lot of them are not even aware of who Depaul is. I think Oliver might have stayed around a while longer if he could have won a NCAA tournament game.

Clemson looking at coaches. From ESPN Insider:
Following the departure of Oliver Purnell for the Windy City, some early names have surfaced for the sudden opening at Clemson.

Early speculation centered on Brad Stevens, who took the Butler Bulldogs to the national championship game on Monday. His current employers removed all doubt by giving the young star a 12-year contract yesterday.

The first name to be considered is former BC coach Al Skinner. He was the first candidate to be interviewed for the position. The second candidate to be considered is Brad Brownell; the Wright State coach -- who some consider to be in line for the Wake Forest opening -- was also interviewed for the Tigers' head spot (per Travis Sawchick of the Post and Courier).

Three other names have entered the conversation in recent days: Baylor's Scott Drew, ODU's Blaine Taylor and Jacksonville's Cliff Warren. Drew has interviewed for the position and is said to be close to top of their list. Warren has also interviewed as has Taylor. The ODU coach would be an interesting choice; his squads play a very deliberate and slower-paced style of basketball, a style that has not been seen by a Clemson team in a long time.

Another non-BCS coach that has drawn interest is Wofford's Mike Young. There was some thought that Young might be targeted for the UNC Wilmington opening (after Ed Conroy turned that job down) but Brian Mull of the Wilmington Star News says he has not heard anything from Young, which could mean negotiations are heating up. Young has impressed SoCon coaches with his halfcourt offense -- could he do the same to ACC rivals?

Shaka Smart, who led the VCU Rams to a CBI tournament title in his first season as a head coach, and his ties to the Clemson program -- he was an assistant there previously -- make him an attractive, if unseasoned, option. However, Smart and VCU AD Norwood Teague say Smart has not been contacted by Clemson (but that doesn't mean a third party hasn't contacted him).

Via Twitter, Columbia, S.C., radio host Jay Phillips added former Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall, a rumor that might have legs.

"Quick. Get a reliable cell number for Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski and beat the crowd," writes Gene Sapakoff. "Fast. Interview Duke's other associate head coach, Chris Collins, before he takes his basketball bloodline elsewhere."

The Wilmington Star-News is reporting that current Clemson assistant Ron Bradley could get the job right now, since time is of the essence in the recruiting world.

Phillips has a recent history of hiring hot young coaches, and Purnell left behind a strong foundation for the incoming coach to build on. Look for more names to arise soon.

You like the hire? Seems Brownwell has done well during his last couple of coaching gigs.

I don't really know enough about him to make a judgement. Rumor was Devin Booker was planning to transfer because he didn't like OP. Hopefully, he'll stay now and they can get Marcus Thornton signed again. He's not known as being a strong recruiter, so I'm hoping he'll get some strong assistants.

Still curious as to why OP left, especially for Depaul. I guess it was the money or maybe the CU admin was starting to pressure him?

It's a small town and the rumors were getting louder and louder that he was having an affair. My guess it has something to do with that.
