one problem is the salary structure in the nba includes a max salary a player can earn. it's not hard to get the same offer from a handful of teams, which means a player is left to weigh other criteria when selecting where to go.

similarly, the sign-and-trade rules don't really give the team with bird rights much of a leg up since they would rather agree to a sign-and-trade to at least get something in return for a franchise player leaving.

and endorsements dwarf salaries for some players anyways. plus, tax structures of some states could easily tip the balance...

it all boils down to not enough incentive to stay with your current team as compared to bailing for a "premiere" team -- particularly one in a state with no income tax.

lebron james is worth more than wade and bosh -- way more. and yet he's paid roughly equal. without a salary structure, he'd easily get much larger offers. equalize the team caps to account for taxes. play hardball with shoe companies and other companies to include some kind of endorsement sharing or something. lebron james is a star because of the nba. he sells shoes because of the nba. his ability to get paid to sell shoes hurts the nba, imo.

I wonder how much Chuck Taylor ever made off the sales of those canvas Converse shoes? I`m guessing there really was a Chuck Taylor.
