A source close to the Diamondbacks' Curt Schilling told Dan Patrick that Schilling hopes to find out later this afternoon whether he will be part of a three-team deal that would send him to Boston.

The potential deal also includes the Brewers, ESPN's Peter Gammons reported on The Dan Patrick Show. Red Sox left-hander Casey Fossum and prospects would be sent to the Brewers and first baseman Richie Sexson would be traded from Milwaukee to Arizona.

Schilling would have to waive his no-trade clause for the trade to happen. Schilling also has said he wants a three-year extension -- his Arizona contract, which will pay him $12 million in 2004, runs out after the coming season.

Updated frpm Espn.com it now just a 2team trade

    Deal awaits pitcher's approval

    ESPN.com news services
The Arizona Diamondbacks are close to making a deal to trade pitcher Curt Schilling to Boston, pending approval from the pitcher himself, reports ESPN's Peter Gammons.

Despite earlier reports on a potential three-team trade between the Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers, Gammons reports that a deal to send Schilling to Boston will instead be handled between just Arizona and the Red Sox.

Boston would send left-handed pitcher Casey Fossum, lefty Jorge De La Rosa, righty Brandon Lyon and outfielder Michael Goss to Arizona for Schilling.

A potential three-way deal was initially discussed, a deal that would have sent Fossum and prospects to the Brewers, while first baseman Richie Sexson would have left Milwaukee for Arizona, with Schilling going to Boston.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and owner John Henry plan to fly out to Arizona on Tuesday night to meet with Schilling, who has to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen.

Schilling also has said he wants a three-year extension -- his Arizona contract, which will pay him $12 million in 2004, runs out after the coming season.

OK, I am a little confused. The new reality in baseball is that you either take the salary of someone and don't give up much in return or you trade prospects and the current team eats some, most, or all of the salary. It seems like the Red Sox are getting the worst of both worlds.

I hope Theo knows what he's doing.....

Heck St Louis is paying all but 1.5 million of Timo Martinez's 9.5 million dollars salary despite trading him to Tampa Bay. Philly is pushing harder to sign Millwood too.
