Yesterday I was referred by a pagan friend to a web posting that expresses more clearly than I ever have why pagans (&, I believe, many other non-Christians) are so offended by proselytizing. I've included the link to the full article at the end of the quote:

    http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art41284.asp

The article "We are the Other People" is top-notch including references directly from the Christian bible. The tone is intended for pagans who are tired of attempts to convert them, but I think open-minded people of any religious persuasion will at least find it interesting.

I've never met a pagan. I wasn't sure they were real. You ever see a Unicorn?

I knew a couple girls that got a little pissy at religion and decided they were going to be pagan. Oh wait, we're going to be humanist. Wait, no, we're going to be wiccan. Yeah, that's it, wiccan! And we can wear dark clothes, too!

There are lots of them. We call them "wannagoths." And unfortunately, that's most people's idea of Wicca & paganism.

We do not need salvation. All we need is the freedom to face our destiny with dignity and honor.

Fluff bunnies. Serious heathens and occultists laugh at them too.

so which came first? the "leave me alone" attitude, or the "don't help somebody who doesn't want help" one? or are they born of the same spirit?

People who try to spread the message of salvation do not attempt to "save" anyone. They are merely telling the story of how one might obtain salvation. It is up to the individual to do so, or not. I think that is a key subtlety that is often missed by those who are offended by christian efforts to spread the gospel.

I am sure there were plenty of real pagans many years ago but people who describe themselves as pagans now seem to be doing so only as a means to outwardly reject christianity, or other mainstream religions. Prehaps I am wrong but that is the general perception I get from them.
