What is the difference between the two and would a salary cap in baseball make a big enough difference?

I believe the luxury tax is to the amount over a set amount that a team who spends above pays to MLB which then is distributed to smaller market teams. So if team A spends 189 million dollars in salaries and the MLB figure is 160 million then team A pays MLB 29 million and that money is spread out between teams XYZ.

Salary Cap IMO would make a huge difference. But then again a salary minimum is also necessary. The Pittsburgh's, and Kansas City's need to spend money as well. They spend chump change and happily take money from the big teams with no real attempt to try to win. Their owners are all about making money rather than trying to win.

The players union is much stronger in MLB as compared to basketball or football. They would and have refused to even consider a cap. It would level the playing field but it's not going to happen.

Kind of reminds me of the auto industry. The Union is ruining the game along with brainless owners

Good point, the difference is that we are still buying the product and at a very high price.

why is that? i stopped watching MLB after the 94 strike i love the game but MLB stinks-i just cant figure out why people still support it-not critisizing-i just dont understand it-the whole steroid thing too-the salaries are way out of hand-10s of millions of dollars a year for mediocre talent- i watch some minor league ball and like to watch kids play but i just cant watch MLB-the whole thing needs to be redone-salary caps, 1 game a week, fewer playoff teams would be a good start

    1 game a week?

A cap would go a long way to level the playing field but until owners once and for all decide to make smart decisions and not over pay (Yankees have 3 players over 20 million a year) then there is no way a cap becomes reality. Personally I like the wild card but I'd also like to see the league contract losing 4 teams
