I'll reserve the woohoo smilie until I see numbers, but this is promising. The last numbers I saw on ESPN this morning were 8 million per.

BOSTON -- Daisuke Matsuzaka headed to Boston on Wednesday with Red Sox officials, a sign Boston had reached a preliminary contract agreement with the star pitcher.

"They all took off together," Red Sox owner John Henry said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Team president Larry Lucchino said shortly after noon ET that the plane was leaving California.

In prior days, agent Scott Boras had said he would not allow Matsuzaka to travel to Boston for a physical unless the sides had reached a preliminary agreement.

Boston officials flew to Newport Beach, Calif., on Monday on Henry's plane and said they would return Wednesday with or without Matsuzaka. The team and Matsuzaka have a midnight Friday ET deadline to reach an agreement.

I saw the $8 mill figure and thought, no fucking way, considering some outlets were reporting Boras was starting negotiaitons at anywhere from $17 to $20 mill. When I saw Boras may have started at $12M, I knew there was hope.

If he signs for $8M, the sox kicked Boras's ass big. (makes up for being raped on the drew deal)

Good lord, that's amazing. I'm shocked enough at the $8.5 million, but the six years makes it insane for Matzusaka. He's walking away from a ton more money.

    Edit:
And just to forestall the inevitable grid thread, yes, I was wrong about the money it would take to sign Matsuzaka.

I hope he works out. Like Collin said the number of years is higher than I thought and if he is as good as advertised he'll be wanting more coin later on. Then again he will be a marketing darling probably making as much in Lo Mein happy meal deals

He better be a stud at these prices. Looks like the Red Sox Nation will be forking over even more bucks for the sacred seats at the Fens. I wonder if he could get Manny on a Sushi diet?

. The Sox held all the cards. Boras had two choices, take the offer or let his guy go back to Japan, then try again next year. The latter wasn't much of an option. Boras doesn't get his commissision and his client doesn't get the job and salary that he wants. 50 mill over 6 isn't bad for a guy that has never pitched a season against MLB talent. Not to mention the 50 mill they gave to his old team in Japan. 100 mill for a pitcher that might be very good. Sounds about right to me.

I don't want to hear a single Red Sox fan bitch about the Yankees spending money. 101 million for a guy who has never thrown a major league pitch. Good for him, but too bad for baseball. Hell, Gil Fuckin Meche got a mint, and he as you wll know sucks ass....
