You know, espn.com exists so you don't have to keep reporting this stuff.

The loss of Varitek is killing the pitching staff.

somewhat. Beckett racked up most of that 5.00 ERA with 'Tek behind the plate. this staff has been average at best all year (4.61 era with Papelbon the only pitcher on the team with an ERA under 3.19) The O has carried them and now that the pen is struggling, it only makes matters worse.

Would just like to point out what a mess Arroyo has been since his hot start. I think he was 6-0 now he 9-8. Hate to say I told you so but...

    And fuck off Playa.

He still has an ERA of 3.45. If you throw out the 2003 season, when he only appeared in six games for the Sox, Arroyo never had an ERA under 4.00. He's hardly the "real" Bronson Arroyo. Not saying he'd be doing the same in the AL, but he's better than Jason Johnson or Kyle Snyder.

Dude, you'll be waiting forever. I already caught Applejack in a bold-faced lie about him supposedly being the set-up man for Smoltz in the minor leagues during the season while with Detroit, but any source will tell you that Smoltz was never a closer at any point in any minor league season. Now he's hanging his hat on the instructional league because those statistics are pretty much impossible to find, as opposed to the regular season ones that proved he's a liar.

Regarding Arroyo, he hasn't been a mess, just unlucky. Grid correctly points out that his ERA is still good, and he has a very impressive 55k/17bb ratio in his last ten starts, none of which he won thanks to bad luck and a suddenly suspect offense. He's giving up home runs at a prolific rate, but various studies have shown that virtually all pitchers give up about one home run per every 10 fly balls. Arroyo's gb/fb rate means he will tend to give up more than his fair share, but he's been really unlucky to give up this many already.

The next 5 games could very well determine the season. Here we go.
