I've only been seriously running for about 8 months. This time last year, I was so out of shape that I could barely make half a mile. So I slowly worked my way up. Started going on 5-8 mile walks just to help out my circulation (I see you mentioned that earlier, and you're absolutely right. The worst thing you can do when you're starting out is to do too much). Also focused on building up the important muscle areas -- abs, back, biceps, triceps, chest, etc. You need to have some strength in those areas for endurance. That's been key for me.

And this should be obvious, but drink plenty of water before and after you run. 2 cups about an hour before running.

I haven't been able to run as far as I did that first day. It's demoralizing. I think it helped that there was some scenery running in front of me.

chippers, you have an ipod? go buy the nike+ ipod kit and download couch to 5k in 9 weeks podcast (comes in mp3 format as well) http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page6/files/category-2.html. you will be amazed at how fast you progess. then download some podrunner bpm mixes from djsteveboy http://www.djsteveboy.com/mixes.html. they are free (all house music but put down your prejudices and run to them) and they help keep your pace. time and miles fly by
