Yeah K got owned in that 1 point loss to UConn, when Duke was a much less talented team, and all the big guys for Duke had fouled out. Shut the fuck up.

I'll give Calhoun credit for winning in 1999. That Duke group is up there with the UNLV team that Duke beat in '91 as one of the best teams ever to not win the national championship. You can say all you want about K paying off the refs, but it's not like poor ol' Carolina doesn't get any calls. Give me a break. Coach K's players have done a lot better in the NBA in the past couple of years. From that Brand class till now is a much improved NBA resume than the Duke players from the early 90's and 80's.

I wonder if you'll still call him a decent coach when he gets 880 wins.

Shouldn't be laughable at all if you've ever been a coach on a competive level for very long and succeeded. I'm just going on my experiences and I've coached for 13years at a competive level. I will take an average athlete with his mind and heart right, than I will a "star" athlete any day. To a coach, or to THIS coach, talent is more than just physical, it's also mental, heart, and 100% effort. The latter 3 are are hard to coach. But some coaches obviously have a knack for pulling the extra out of some kids. A good recruiting coach looks for these attributes, so yes a lot of it is in recruiting. It doesn't matter how good of a coach you are, it is VERY difficult to get the "star" athlete to adhere to what you want them to do. Actually I have kicked a many "star" athlete's off my teams for that reason. I knew some or most people wouldn't get or understand what I'm saying, it's difficult for the average fan or bystander to realize what all it takes to succeed, it goes FAR beyond coaching, and Coach K does all of that really well.

Pretty sure I never disagreed *looking back at post*, nope nope sure didn't, that Roy shouldn't have won any Championships while in Kansas. All I said is that I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt until he has all his own players here in Carolina. Hell Dean should have won at LEAST 2 others in all the years that he coached. I'm still glad we had him though, and wouldn't have ever taken any other coach in place of him. And right now I wouldn't take any other coach over Roy. That may change in a few years, we'll just have to wait and see.

Pretty par for the course it being laughable to some.

He just accomplished what no Carolina coach has accomplished in the past 12 years - a regular season conference title...plus he inherited a team that was 8-20 the year before, and three years later he is a # 1 seed in the tourney...

Didn't Doherty get a conference title. Technically he tied with Duke at 13-3 his very first season, and they split the regular season. If Duke hadn't won the national Championship that year, I'd still be grimacing about that.
