Williams signs to stay with Tar Heels through 2014-15 season

    --------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina awarded coach Roy Williams a four-year contract extension Thursday that will keep him with the Tar Heels through the 2014-15 season.

Williams, who signed an eight-year contract to coach his alma mater before the 2003-04 season, will make up to $1.8 million each year plus incentives based on the Tar Heels' performance on the court and in the classroom.

"Roy Williams is the most complete coach in the country," athletic director Dick Baddour said. "I knew when we hired him he was an outstanding basketball coach, but he has also exceeded our every expectation in the manner in which he runs a basketball program. He believes in character first, he coaches for all the right reasons and he is a first-rate ambassador of our university."

Williams, who will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in September, is 106-30 in four seasons at North Carolina and 524-131 in 19 seasons with the Tar Heels and Kansas. He won his only national championship in 2005.

"I am excited about coaching at Carolina and look forward to these next eight years," Williams said. "I am past the point in my career where people refer to 'that young coach Roy Williams,' but I know I can go this long. I just hope my players can put up with me."

The new contract will pay Williams an annual base salary of $325,000, a $30,000 expense account and supplemental income paid by the university ranging from $1.2 million to $1.5 million. Bonuses are included for qualifying for and advancing in the NCAA tournament and for graduation rates that meet or exceed the general student body.

North Carolina finished 31-7 this season, shared the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title, won the league tournament and advanced to the East Regional finals, where the top-seeded Tar Heels lost in overtime to Georgetown.

You'd think the "most complete coach" would have made a program better not just stepped into two already successful programs.

I mean come on. He coached for 15 years at Kansas, a program 1 year removed from a NC and couldn't do it again.

Has any coach in the last 50 years taken over a program 1 year out of a NC, coached for 15 years and failed to win another one?

Good deal to sign the best coach in the ACC to an extension...

K already had a lifetime contract.

Best coach in the ACC wouldn't have blown that Georgetown lead with a more talented team. Roy is a terrible game coach. Talent and years of playing in the Big 12 will hide that.

been there. they play in a giant quonset hut affectionately called "Phil's Quonset Hut." The court is affectionately called "Phil's Court." The orange, air-filled orbs they use during games are affectionately called "Phil's Balls."

Phil sure could coach and his legacy will live on forever in Ashtabula, OH, home of the UNC-Chapel Hill at Ashtabula Fighting Ashclowns.

Do you really want us to go into K losing games he shouldn't have? I don't know if there's enough room on the internet, but we can try.

But he would lose to an inferior team led by a bunch of freshman? At home? With the POY? On Senior Night?
