Extended Version Of 'Return Of The King' Gets DVD Date
Jackson Adding 50 Minutes To Oscar-Winning Film

    POSTED: 12:24 pm EDT September 27, 2004

The Oscar-winning fantasy epic "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" just got a whole lot more epic in scale.

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that the extended version of the film will make its debut on home video and DVD Dec. 14 with an additional 50 minutes of footage.

The theatrical version, which won 11 Oscars earlier this year including Best Picture and Best Director for Peter Jackson, clocked in at 3 hours and 20 minutes.

"In this Special Extended Edition, Peter Jackson has created the ultimate conclusion to a true filmmaking achievement," New Line Home Entertainment president and chief operating officer, Stephen Einhorn said in a statement. According to New Line, the extended version will include the final appearance of the evil wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee). Saruman was last seen at the end of "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" when he was under siege by the living tree creatures, the Ents, and his fate was cut from the theatrical release of "The Return of the King."

The studio said other new scenes include Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) being confronted by the Mouth of Sauron and an emerging romance between Faramir (David Wenham) and Eowyn (Miranda Otto) -- as well as a "suprising" cameo by Jackson.

The extended version of the film will also include 300 more special effects shots by WETA digital and new music by the trilogy's Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore.

The film will be accompanied by four complete, separate audio commentary tracks, including Jackson and more than 30 members of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" cast and production team, including Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, Oscar-winning make-up and effects supervisor Richard Taylor, Shore and more.

The feature will be presented on two discs, and there will be two additional discs of bonus material, said New Line.

You know there will eventually be a box set - probably released Christmas 2005. They know people want that but can't wait so they will buy the extended version of ROTK this year then buy the box set in 2005 - which will have some extras thrown in.

Yep, but I don't think it will include any additional extras. It's set at $120. It will also be released on Dec. 14th.
