NEW YORK—Rose Byrne admits she has grown out of a strange phase. The Australian star of a new film about the gift of prophecy says she could relate to the movie, called Knowing, because there was a time in her life when she was a true believer.

“I used to see a lot of psychics,” she says in a New York hotel room. “I would treat myself every six months to psychics in England and the U.S. and Australia, wherever the work took me. Then one day I realized it is better to cast away those things and try to be present.
“The last time I went to one, I realized the whole thing was based on self-fulfilling prophecy,” she continues. “A psychic tells you that you are going to move to New Mexico, and you move there and you have to think, ‘Did I move here because they told me to be here?’ I came to the conclusion that the mystery of not knowing is a sacred thing and a beautiful part of life.
“I think the mysteries are the things you have to hold onto because you know everything now. We all know everything that is going on in politics and pop culture,” she says. “I also realized that it [psychics] is basically a form of therapy. You just sit there and talk about yourself: ‘What do you think of me?’ If you are doing that, you should probably see a trained professional rather than some hack.”
