    Former 49er arrested after gunfire

Rodney White, a forward with the Denver Nuggets last season, was arrested in Washington early Sunday after a Secret Service agent said he saw the basketball player and his friends firing guns in the air.

White, 24, and two friends were arrested about 5 a.m. at 24th Street and Connecticut Avenue near the National Zoo, said Secret Service spokesman Tom Mazur.

An agent reported he spotted someone firing in the air from a car driving along Rock Creek Parkway. The car was stopped, and weapons were found inside, Mazur said.

White is a free agent after spending the past two seasons with the Nuggets.

A 6-foot-9 forward, he was a first-round pick, ninth overall, in the 2001 NBA draft by Detroit after he played one season at Charlotte. -- DENVER POST

    He must have been shit-faced drunk as a mother-fucker. It's a good thing a Fed can't give a DUI.

NBA Player, Two Others Arrested, Men Held After Shots Fired From Car on Rock Creek Parkway

A National Basketball Association player and two other men were arrested in the District early yesterday after shots were fired from a car on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The player was identified as Rodney C. White, 24, of Denver. White, a 6-foot-9 forward, played for the Denver Nuggets the past two seasons and is a free agent. A team spokesman confirmed last night that White had been arrested.

In 1999, White helped lead a private school in Montgomery County to a basketball championship. He also was known as one of the top players in a highly regarded summer league here.

Tom Mazur, a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, said an officer in the uniformed division who was on his way to work saw shots fired into the air about 4:45 a.m. yesterday from a vehicle on the parkway. He said Secret Service officers stopped an SUV at Connecticut Avenue and 24th Street NW and arrested three men who were inside.

Mazur identified the others arrested as Anthony O. Butler Jr., 21, of Detroit and Kyle A. Doman, 24, of Bowie.

The three were charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of unregistered ammunition, Mazur said.

Police said at least one gun and a knife were found in the vehicle.

A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office here said the three would remain in police custody until they were presented in D.C. Superior Court today.

After attracting attention for his play as a freshman at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte during the 2000-01 season, White was drafted in the first round by the Detroit Pistons in 2001.

After a season with the Pistons, he was signed by the Nuggets, where he averaged 7.5 points per game last season.

After the 1998-99 high school season, in which he played for the Newport School in Kensington, he was chosen as a member of The Washington Post's All-Met boys basketball team. He averaged 18.7 points a game for Newport and scored more than 1,500 points during his high school career.

According to an account posted three years ago on SportsIllustrated.CNN.com, after high school and before college, White was named most valuable player in Washington's Kenner summer league.

Ex-Nugget held on D.C. gun charges
By Adam Thompson and Sean Kelly, Denver Post Staff Writers

Rodney White, who became a free agent after last season, was arrested after a Secret Service agent reported that people in a car were firing guns into the air.

Rodney White, a forward with the Denver Nuggets last season, was arrested in Washington, D.C., early Sunday after a Secret Service agent said he saw the basketball player and his friends firing guns in the air.

White, 24, and two friends were arrested about 5 a.m. at 24th Street and Connecticut Avenue near the National Zoo, said Secret Service spokesman Tom Mazur.

An agent reported that he spotted someone firing in the air from a car driving along Rock Creek Parkway. The car was stopped and weapons were found inside, Mazur said.

No one was injured in the shooting, he said.

White, who is a free agent after spending the past two years with the Nuggets, could not be reached for comment. His agent did not return a phone call.

"The Nuggets have no comment. He's a free agent. He's not under contract with us," said Nuggets spokesman Eric Sebastian.

White was arrested along with Anthony O. Butler Jr. of Detroit and Kyle A. Boman of Bowie, Md. The three men were taken to the Third Police District. A Metropolitan (D.C.) police officer said White remained in jail Sunday afternoon.

All three men face six charges, Mazur said: carrying a prohibited weapon without a license, unregistered firearms, unregistered ammunition, possession of fireworks, possession of a prohibited weapon and unlawful discharge of a firearm. The last charge is a felony.

The offenses will be prosecuted by the U.S. attorney's office in Washington. White lives in the Washington area during the offseason.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward was a first-round pick, ninth overall, in the 2001 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons after he played only his freshman season at North Carolina-Charlotte.

He was traded to the Nuggets in 2002 for two players and a first-round draft choice. In 144 games with the Nuggets, he averaged 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

White became a free agent after the Nuggets declined to pick up his $2.4 million option for next season in order to clear salary-cap space. Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe has said he wants to re-sign White. Vandeweghe could not be reached Sunday.
