well, mine only lasted about 5 hours yesterday.

ty, on the other hand, was puking again last night.

he threw up in his room, then the sink in his bathroom...then he came into our room at about 2:30. he said he just wanted to sleep in there with us. well, then jillian got up so gina went to put her back in bed and smelled all of the puke from ty. ty said he didn't want to tell us because he wanted to go to school today. then he couldn't make it to the bathroom in time this mornign and some diareah got in his pants.

    this is a yucky virus.

Its so hard to see them that sick. It was my first time seeing Zoe throw up and I felt so helpless. I cant imagine having two sick at the same time, you and Gina are good parents Larry.

We've got Roto and RSV at the day care right now. Watch for dehydration.... One of our little ones ended up in the hospital getting IV fluids.

    Q. What is Rotovirus (or Rotavirus)?

    A.
Rotovirus (or Rotavirus) is a common viral infection among young children. It is the most common cause of diarrhea in U.S. children and is a leading cause of death among children in developing countries. The virus works by attacking the lining of the small intestine, causing often copious loss of fluids and electrolytes. The virus is spread through oral contact to fecal material, and is common in child care environments.
While some medications may be prescribed to help treat symptoms such as nausea, there is currently no drug that is prescribed to treat the virus itself. Antibiotics are not effective since it is a viral infection as opposed to a bacterial infection. There was some success with a vaccine, but many children suffered ill effects from the vaccine and it has been subsequently pulled from the market.

The symptoms of this illness include diarrhea, low grade fever, vomiting and nausea. These symptoms usually last for 3-10 days. But even if the symptoms have subsided or improved, you should consider your child contagious for 10-12 days after the onset of diarrhea.

Treatment at home includes plenty of rest and use of an oral electrolyte replacement solution such as Pedialyte. Gatorade and other sports drinks are not recommended as they contain high amounts of sugars that can further irritate the intestinal tract. Begin giving Pedialyte at the first sign of loose stools or vomiting. Nursing mothers should continue nursing in addition to giving Pedialyte.

The biggest danger with this illness is dehydration. Signs of severe dehydration include irritability, lethargy, sunken eyes, sunken soft spot (in infants), dry mouth and tongue, less frequent bathroom trips and dry diapers for more than a couple of hours. If you notice these signs, it is imperative that you contact your physician immediately. If your child is hospitalized, IV rehydration is usually given and can save your child's life.

To help prevent the spread of this illness, be sure to wash your hands frequently and sanitize any surface that you use for diapering. If your child attends child care, check to make sure that proper handwashing and sanitation procedures are being followed, which includes washing hands for those who are potty training after each bathroom use.

ty's back at the doctor as i type. he's not wanting to drink or eat.

i guess the hospital is an option.

he puked twice again last night. he's had diareah for 12 days. puking on and off for 11.

They will ask that you obtain stool from him some way. Is Ty potty trained? Im assuming yes, but just ask him to tell you when he has to make a shooey and get it the best way possible. You dont have to have much. Maybe you could ask him to wear a diaper just this one time.

They are likely checking to make SURE its the roto virus and not salmonella or some other bacterial infection.

with that much diarrhea, they will probably try to rule out ova and parasites.

he hasn't worn a diaper in years. this won't really be stool as much as it will be brown water -- it just shoots right out like turning on a faucet. it'llbe like getting a urine sample.
