I was purusing through my mother's CD collection and came across a box set I had given her a few years ago: Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Keith Emerson is just a fantastic musician.

I also found a CD of which I still have her original vinyl version: 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII' by Rick Wakeman. Unbelievable. I had forgotten how good that album is and how good he is.

I don't want to seem shallow here, but isn't keyboards like the epitome of " i can't play an instrument so I'll play keyboard" syndrome? Truly, I've never tried playing one, does it take any talent?

I don't know about that. I kinda always thought that described bass guitar (no offense intended, bass folks).

Both Wakeman and Emerson are classically-trained pianists. They just happen to like rock, too.

Keyboards now don't need much talent because of all the computer progamming, MIDI shit. In the old days they actually had to play keyboards. Rick Wakeman, I remember a pic of him playing with Yes, he had one hand on one keyboard in front of him, his other hand on a keyboard behind him, and one foot on some sort of footpedal thing. Nowadays, flip a few switches and buttons and you've got an orchestra.

    Oh, bass players:

Q:How do you get a bass player off your porch?

A: Pay him for the pizza!!

    Ouch.:)

I saw ELP in concert in Charlotte, back when they had Cozy Powell and when the Big I was the only colisseum. General admission tickets. Sugar Creek opened for them. We got 2nd row center, then the people in front of us left after Sugar Creek finished and we were front row center. Best concert I've ever attended, hands down.

Emerson was doing like Wakeman, HP. And the piano he played was one of those big-ass grands.

I saw ELP in concert a couple of times, and Emerson was just amazing...the sounds he had coming out of that keyboard was awesome.

Billy Joel and Elton John also come to mind. Billy Joel trained himself i know, not sure about Elton John.
