Right and Wrong

What's right for them maybe wrong for you and vise versa. To me this flexible statement to me says that though stealing maybe wrong for me, at some point in your life stealing maybe what is right for you. Maybe completing high school is right for you but it maybe wrong for me. Any thoughts?

 

I think this whole debate hinges on how one defines "right" and "wrong".

 

i think the debate is dependent upon NOT defining right and wrong. I am reading this book called The Tenth Circle where this kid is an outsider and so he start doing things like stealing and drinking to live up to his name the outsider and in the end maybe this action was "right " for him.

 

I would separate the concept of morality/ethics from what is necessary (or right) for the growth of someone's character. I haven't read the book, so I don't know if that's what it's about. I'm guessing.

I think there are certain universal basics that never change, such as the prohibition of murder. The rest is a matter of individual or group opinion. On those fundamental issues, saying "It's right for me because I say so" doesn't wash.

 

I read book the Jodi Picoult story in question and its a good book. Jodi tells a good underdog story. When it comes to questions of right and wrong though I like to observe the Golden Rule "Do unto others . . ."

 

I think that sometimes we must do something that is wrong. Manipulating the mind/heart into thinking wrong is right doesn't make it right, IMHO. Wrong is still wrong even if it's necessary.

 

I agree. The thread I started in R&R today gives a prime example as far as I'm concerned. The ruling by the US Supreme Court that the death penalty is "cruel & unusual punishment" for child rape if the child doesn't die. If my child or grandchild--or any child who has no one else to stand up for him or her--is the victim, & I know the state will not impose the death penalty, I would. Murder is still wrong, & I'd be willing to pay the penalty for it. But I believe it would be the right thing for me to do under those circumstances.

 

I heard of the 10th circle before but I thought it was a movie, one I hadn't seen, I never knew there was a book. And I agree with Jazzblues though something may be neccesary if it is wron it isn't made right by the fact is is neccessity. Like stealing to eat.

 

I'm in my summer quarter at at Temple, in my ethics class we never discuss right and wrong as they are rather we speak in terms of ethical and unethical. Somethings though they maybe wrong can be considered ethical. It all depends on the situation. I looked into this book slash movie to see if i could relate it to my studies it is going to be on lifetime this Saturday at 9. I'll pick up the book and watch the movie and let you know what I think. Other wise does any one else have any other suggestions for books with an over arching theme of an ethical nature?

 

So I actually caught the encore of the 10th circle last night and I noted that in this movie as in the book right and wrong are hardly subjective as they refer to Dante's Inferno. So wrong is wrong and it is the same for every body.
