Reports: Dale Carter suspended by NFL for substance abuse|

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Saints cornerback Dale Carter has been suspended by the NFL for failing a drug test for alcohol, according to reports citing unidentified league sources.
CBS SportsLine.com said Thursday that Carter had been suspended indefinitely, while The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported that he was suspended for six games, with the Saints trying to get the league to reduce it to four games. Calls to Saints officials from the AP were not returned Thursday night.
Carter, who signed a seven-year, $28 million contract with the Saints on March 12, was suspended in April 2000 for 1 years for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
The four-time Pro Bowl selection and 1992 NFL rookie of the year signed with Minnesota in November 2001 and spent the rest of last season with the Vikings.
CBS SportsLine.com cited one of its sources as saying Carter tested positive for alcohol in March, just days after he signed with the Saints. Under the agreement with the NFL Management Council that allowed him to be reinstated, Carter agreed to abstain from alcohol and was told a positive test would result in a suspension.

good call by New Orleans. Carter is suspended and Craver's got health issues. Way to address that corner situation. Fred Thomas is their best guy, at 5'9.

again? man, he is not a worthy nfl cb, if you ask me.

prior to the vikings, he was with the broncos. also suspended for a while for same reason, before the vikings signed him up. what a waste! :(

They have that?! Well, I'll be.

It's nice to see other teams go through the same shit we have to go through every year.

What morons. Nobody could see this coming.

As a Tennessee Vol fan, I'm saddened by Dale's struggles. He has nobody to blame but himself, though. He was the best young corner in the league with the Chiefs, a multi-year Pro Bowler, great kick returner, a rare talent. And then he threw it all away. And now that he threw it away again, it's probably for good. Even though its alcohol, not the coke he was busted for before, I suppose this is the lifetime suspention.

If your are in the league's substance abuse program, unless your name is Bret Farve, you are not supposed to drink alcohol.

  7. I don't get something here...the some of biggest sponsors of the NFL are Budeweiser and Coors....why suspend a player for using products that you receive a large amount of money from and seemingly expect the fans to buy a lot of?

It is the off-season, so the guy drank...who cares? If he were using cocaine or something illegal then that's a different story. I remember Farve got hooked on vicaden for pain and therefore couldn't have a beer with his teammates after games...come on. a drink now and then isn't huring anyone.

yup. i think what they are trying to say is...there is drinking socially, and there is substance abuse.

ok, am sure there is a line that one crosses to get to substance abuse part. lol.

yup, ironic, but yup. it's real.

what i dont get is this: how can one have such talent, future and just throw it all away like that? consistently, too! what, his money cant buy professional help? is he just plain stupid? hard to believe, even if it seems true. watch, he will get reinstated again.
