IONIA, Mich. (AP) — Atlanta Falcons first-round draft pick T.J. Duckett was assaulted by three men after a concert at the Greater Ionia Fair, according to a broadcast report.
Ionia County sheriff’s deputies said three men started a fight with the former Michigan State running back about 10 p.m. Tuesday after the concert by the rapper Nelly, Lansing television station WILX reported.
Duckett, who was a personal guest of Nelly, was hit with a bottle, knocking out one tooth; he suffered no other injuries and resumed workouts Thursday, WLIX said.
Police reports said the three men were intoxicated. One was interviewed, but no arrests were made.
A message left for Duckett on Thursday night by The Associated Press was not immediately returned, and sheriff’s deputies declined to provide any information.
Duckett has not yet agreed to a contract with the Falcons and has been absent from the team’s training camp, which began Thursday in Greenville, S.C. The two sides are $1.4 million apart on the signing bonus.
Falcons spokesman Aaron Salkin said that the team was not aware of the assault but was looking into it.
Duckett is the first No. 1 pick to miss the start of training camp since coach Dan Reeves came to Atlanta in 1997. While the coach isn’t expecting a long holdout, he does concede that every day is important to a rookie’s development.
‘‘All the stuff that happened today, he can’t make that up,’’ Reeves said after the first day. ‘‘Everything we did today is gone. He has a lot of things to learn. ... It’s hard to replace that.’’
