The difference is that I didn't want the kind of tedious bickering with all emotion an little substance in R&S. As emotional and heated as politics can be, faith gets even hotter and more personal. That's why I had to set some ground rules. Otherwise this place would deteriorate into R&R without the pleasantries.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, the answer is "always".

If those were my choices, I'd either abstain or vote 3rd party.

I have no idea. But whether the German people thought he was a good Catholic is irrelevant if we're asking if he actually was a good Catholic. That's determined by the diocese, I suppose.

Agreed. But I'd argue they're more heavily influenced by power -- specifically the lust for it.

Not anymore, anyway. But I think Christian totalitarianism went arm-in-arm with monarchies. When that style of government was replaced by democracy, the Christian church lost a lot of its political power. Funny thing about that...

Agreed, and because it is a subjective thing, it will vary from person to person. For me, my only real black-and-white litmus test for politicians is the question of abortion. I cannot in good conscience vote for a Pro Choice candidate. That is not to say, however, that I will automatically vote for a Pro Life candidate. If, in WV's example, the Pro Life candidate was totally oblivious to the environment, I wouldn't vote for him.

Sorry, hb. I should have clarified that I was questioning the purpose of NOTD moreso than I was questioning how you run R&S. I got no problem with the latter.

I don't think NOTD could actually exist without tremendous bickering.
