49ers | List To Dwindle? - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
5:46 PT: The San Francisco Chronicle reports the San Francisco 49ers may pare their list of head coaching candidates later Tuesday. Right now, there are four candidates. As previously noted, they are: Ted Cottrell (Jets defensive coordinator), Romeo Crennel (Patriots defensive coordinator), Jim Mora (49ers defensive coordinator) and Greg Blache (Bears defensive coordinator). 49ers GM Terry Donahue could pull the plug on all of them and opt for a college coach. None of the aforementioned four has emerged as a clear favorite.

Hmm... Lemme think about this one. Would his style fit with Fox's? Would he be a good teacher?

I would take Ray Rhodes although he better attack like Del Rio did. Rhodes can get it done IMO.

Rhodes is somebody I would not want.

He's a good coach............but I want to run the same defensive scheme we ran last year. Rhodes could do that, but he knows just enough about football to think he could tweak it, his way, and fuck it all up.

I'm not sure what kind of ego he carries either.

Basically I'd rather get a younger guy that can identify better with our younger players, and have some fire & energy.

Rhodes would be a better fit on a more veteren like defense trying to get to the next level, like Washington or SF.

Rhodes could do a good cop to Fox' bad cop. He's a players' coach but lacks the ability to really get passionate.
He's a good gameplanner. Not a huge blitzer.
he didnt' work out well in DC or in Denver, where he statistically fielded good teams and then was basically driven away after a year. I think the chemistry of this team suggests that it could use a stern leader/administrator moreso than a player's coach type guy, especially one who seems to clash with what people want.

    Edwards Named Redskins Defensive Coordinator

    01/15/2003

By Jason Gould -- Editor, Redskins.com

The Redskins announced Wednesday they have promoted linebackers coach George Edwards to defensive coordinator. The move comes a day after Marvin Lewis was hired as the new head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Edwards, 36, becomes the Redskins' fifth defensive coordinator in the last five seasons. Mike Nolan, Ray Rhodes, Kurt Schottenheimer and Lewis directed the defense in the previous four seasons. Under Rhodes, Schottenheimer and Lewis, the unit finished in the top 10 in the NFL. Last season under Lewis, Washington's defense finished fifth in the league.

The linebacking corps had a successful first season under Edwards. Linebacker LaVar Arrington perhaps had his best season as a pro, recording 107 tackles. He also had 11 sacks to lead NFL linebackers. Jessie Armstead and Jeremiah Trotter contributed 107 and 104 tackles, respectively, with Trotter’s season ending prematurely with a knee injury on Week 13. The unit combined for five forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in 2002.

Edwards came to Washington last season to join head coach Steve Spurrier's staff. He spent four seasons as the linebackers coach in Dallas before joining the Redskins last season. Under his tutelage, the Cowboys linebackers helped Dallas defense finish second in the NFC in total defense and fourth in the NFL in 2001. Edwards also aided in the development of linebackers Dat Nguyen and Darren Hambrick.

Edwards played linebacker for Spurrier at Duke. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Spurrier at Florida in 1991.

Lewis leaves Washington after one season as defensive coordinator. After a slow start, the Redskins' defense played with increasing consistency as the season wore on. By the end of the season, Washington's defense had climbed to fifth in the NFL. Lewis spent six seasons as Baltimore's defensive coordinator before joining the Redskins in 2002.
