Fred might know these folks . .

"Urging folks to boycott movie mocking Christ
Posted: June 2, 2003 12:01 a.m. I am writing you all to say something about the movie "Bruce Almighty." It is making fun of our Lord Jesus Christ. Plain and simple. They (depict) walking on water. Jesus was the only man to walk on water. Other things in the movie were things that Christ did while on earth. I hope that all us Christians stand up for what is right. We all - even I - need to get back to living in the ways of Christ by reading in holy word. We all wear bracelets that say W.W.J.D. That means "What would Jesus do?" Would he go to this movie? No. "

WTF is this guy thinking? Another example of folks giving Western NC a bad name.

I wonder how many phone calls this guy will get? The citizen times is bad for posting names in there print and online editorials

so i guess you have wear a bracelet to be called a Christian. And to draw a conclusion about what Jesus would do and make the decision for him, is there anything wrong with that?

Hmm... I must've missed that part. Other than language, I saw no ridicule of Jesus at all.

Wrong -- Peter did. In fact, if memory serves that scene in Bruce Almighty was very similar to Peter meeting Jesus on the water. A good illustration, with a little comic relief.

Such as...??? I don't recall any similarities between Bruce's actions and the Gospels.

This is the first statment in this letter that has made any sense at all.

This could be argued for days on end, with little to show for the effort. However, from a Christian point of view, I personally think it's important for us to get/stay intelligent about how God "looks" to people who do not share our beliefs. Movies like "Bruce Almighty" is a fairly good example of that, IMO. I didn't go see it for entertainment value, I went to see if there were any illustrations I could use to talk to people who want to know more about Christianity, and more about God Himself. And you know what? I found a ton of them in that movie. I know pastors who will use parts of that movie to communicate Biblical truth to people who are seeking out God. People may end up in heaven because of how parts of that movie can be used.

I really wish the "Religious Right" would get down off their high horses, do away from the battle cries against the 'evils' of society, government, and Hollywood, and redirect all that scrutiny back on their own lives.

"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." --Matthew 7:3-5

If someone is out and out trying to put down my beliefs or my religion I'll speak out. However, I figure God's big enough to denfend himself. He doesnt' need me to do it. Besides this movie sounds like entertainment. Which is why most of us go to the movies. I can read my Bible for the truth. I don't expect Jim Carrey to provide it.
