Quinn new women's tennis coach

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers director of athletics Judy Rose has announced the hiring of Michaela Quinn as head women's tennis coach for the 49ers. Quinn had been an assistant at UNC Greensboro for two seasons.

"We are very pleased to bring in Michaela to run our women's tennis team," said Rose. "She has been familiar with our program for several years and we definitely took note of the interest and enthusiasm she brings to the position. She is extremely excited to be a part of the 49ers and we are equally excited to have her."

"I love the city and what the university is doing in terms of growth," Quinn said. "I wanted to go to a situation that was moving forward and Charlotte is doing that. I'm extremely excited and ready to get started. I want to start working right away."

Quinn, a four-year letterwinner at UNC Greensboro, has served as the Spartans' assistant coach for the last two years. As an assistant to head coach Jeff Trivette, who oversaw both the men's and women's teams, Quinn led conditionning and player development drills, conducted on-court coaching during practice and tournament play, handled off-campus recruiting and oversaw administrative responsiblities concerning team travel, equipment, budget and academic progress.

"A lot of what I know, tennis-wise and team-wise, I learned from Jeff," Quinn said. "My goal is to create an atmosphere where (the team) can be successful on the court and off the court. I want to create a team atmosphere where the players will work hard for each other. I like the way Jeff created that (at UNC Greensboro). I learned a lot as a player and as a coach from him."

A native of Charlotte who attended South Mecklenburg High, Quinn is particularly familiar with the 49ers program. In fact, her first tennis coach was longtime 49ers coach Penny Brawley. In addition, due to the close proximity of UNC Greensboro and UNC Charlotte, Quinn has had occasion to see the 49ers in action.

"The fact that she comes from Charlotte and played for Penny and considers Penny her first coach makes it even more special," said Rose. "We are also thrilled she was able to come in as quickly as she did, considering the season is already underway."

"I enjoy working hard," Quinn said, "and watching the girls compete, it's clear they like to work hard. I've competed and coached against them. On the court, they give it their all. In watching the team, I've noticed that they are really team-oriented. They seem like a great group of girls who will work hard for each other."

Quinn replaces Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods, who resigned in September.
