Could the receiver have just heaved the ball out of bounds to stop the clock instead of running it out?

If he threw it behind him out of bounds, then I don't see why not. The refs would have shit and the NFL would certainly change some rules, but I don't know that he couldn't have done it.

I wondered the same, couldn't he have just tossed it out? Whats the rule?

But for the record, I was a Steeler Fan all my life before Carolina got the Panthers... so go Pittsburgh!!!

I dont know that it would have helped him to do that. It would have not stopped the clock until the ball hit the ground. If he threw it out of bounds the time might have still ran out. It was a bad play for the Browns.

    Go Steelers!!!!!

if he threw it with a downward trajectory out of bounds and behind him, it would've stopped the clock w/ about a second or so left. if he lobbed it back, refs would've let the clock run out.

Boy you guys have a short memory. The same thing happened last year year with Mike Minter when he was tackled on the opponents goal line and fumbled the ball out of bounds. First and 10 on the 20 for our opponent.
