with all the yankee fans talking like its over already, i pose this question. what did you gain, other than a couple homers and a better fielder? you could say clubhouse presence, but a-rod has been said by teammates to be pretty much an ass. you could say ticket and merchandise sales, but its the yankees. they sell a shitload of crap anyways, and are almost always sold out or close to it.

soriano, even tho i can't stand him, is a 40/40 guy. a-rod is not gonna hit many more homers than him, will not steal near as many bases, you now have a hole at second (granted, soriano was horrible) that has to be filled, and you lost a helluva leadoff guy if he could curb the strikeout problems. oh yeah, a huge price tag too.

    tell me this.

Soriano was my favorite Yankee, so it is tough for me to be in favor of this trade.

Lets start by saying, the money doesn't matter. He will pay for himself in merchendise, and if he doesn't, who cares? The Yankees have more money than they can spend, and believe me, they try.

That being said, Kenny Lofton is going to take over the leadoff duties, and would have even if Soriano had stayed moving Soriano to the 2, 3, 5 or 6 spot, so not much of a loss there. Soriano will never lead off again, so chances are his steals will drop a bit, his homers, and RBI's will go up. Basically he will be A-Rod, younger, cheaper, and not as good with the glove. A-Rod will bat 3rd, hit about the same as Soriano would have, it will be a wash.

It was going to be nobody at 3rd that can't hit, just field, and an error waiting to happen at 2nd that can hit with the best of them. Now it is an MVP candidate at 3rd that can field, and a guy at 2nd that can't hit a lick, but might be able to turn a double play every now and then.

The real gain was in the field. I don't like it, but then again I wish you could watch a player play his career with the team that brought him up. What do I know.

The yankees got the best all-around player in the game. he is a 50+ homerun hitter...will drive in 120+ runs...score over 100 runs...and is a two time cold glove winner at SS. although soriano has put up some nice numbers offensively the past two years, has a few glaring holes in his game.

but i don't believe it is over. the yankees have built a formidable offensive team. Giambi, Jeter, A-rod, Sheffield, Matsui, Posada...these are names that are pretty scary when in the same lineup. they lost a lot of pitching in the offseason...mainly a dominant lefty like Pettite. the yankees have exactly 3 left handers on the 40 man roster. names like Danny Borrell, Felix Heredia, and Gabe White do not exactly strike fear into the hearts of big league hitters. of course, none of these guys will be in the starting rotation.

the yankees WILL win a lot of games. and George WILL go get a lefty starter in mid-season if he feels the need. but they are NOT guaranteed the world series this year.

He gives them the two wins they needed for the World Series.

Within 2 years they get a better 3rd baseman, move a-rod to short, and jeter to 2nd.

i'm not sure which is a more overrated fielding shortstop, a-rod or jeter. they aren't in the top 5 fielding shortstops in the league.

huh? A-rod was the top fielding SS by fielding percent in all of Major League baseball last year. he committed 8 errors on 699 total chances.

because he doesn't get to many balls up the middle or in the hole. tough to make an E when you don't get to the ball.

fielding % can be a very misleading stat.

I'm a Yankees fan, and I know there's no way it's over. You gotta have good pitching. All the offense in the world won't help you if you ain't got pitching (right, Cleveland Indians?).

Dude, they're going to have a 1,000 plus run season. Whenever you have a 1,000+ runs, chances are good things will happen.
