WBTV reported on 11 p.m. newscast that Division II Queens lost men's coach Bart Lundy to High Point. He's the third Queens coach to bolt for a Division I program.

The Observer did a profile of Lundy during the Madness. From what i hear, he's a smart one and could move on to bigger jobs.

You beat me to the story mediafreak. A press conference is scheduled for 1:00 pm to announce Lundy's hiring. He is replacing Jerry Steele after 31 seasons, which will be no small task.

Jerry Steele is an icon in the High Point community. He served as the HPU's Director of Athletics for 25 years (1972-98), and is a member of both the NAIA Hall of Fame (1987) and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (2002). Steele, who came to the University in 1972, won 609 games, 8 conference titles, qualified for postseason play 15 times, advanced to the NAIA National Tournament on five occasions, and made a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Steele also presided over the Panthers' move to NCAA Division I competition in 1999, and HPU's run to the Big South Championship finals in 2002, the first year the school was eligible to compete in the tournament. An Elkin, NC native, Steele played for three seasons at Wake Forest under Bones McKinney. In 1961, he teamed with Len Chappell and Billy Packer to help lead the Demon Deacons to their first Atlantic Coast Conference title and a Final Four trip. Some of Steele's former players include University of Kentucky head coach Orlando "Tubby" Smith, former ABA and NBA player/coach Gene Littles, current South Carolina and former WFU head coach Dave Odom, former NBA player/coach M.L. Carr and Bob Kauffman, the third player selected in the 1968 NBA Draft.

He's been here a LONG time.

Hey HP - did Steele ever coach at Guilford College in the 70s?

I know ML Carr played at Guilford because he was on the NAIA National Champion team that also included World B Free. Our old high school Steve Hankins also played on that team.

yes wossa, he was there after being an assistant under McKinney and also head coach for a short time for the ABA Carolina Cougars. Free and Kauffman were both players for the Quakers.

I'd forgotten that Hankins played there at that time, gee that was a long time ago. He and Coach George Foree at Andrews (my mentor, who got me into the UNCC athletic department) used to have some good battles. Foree played at Winston-Salem State with a pretty decent basketball player named Earl Monroe.
