If you look at who is in the superbowl this year it is Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson. Two "journeymen" QBs who finally found a home. I think that would be the best thing for us to do is try to find a guy like that who can win right away. Even if the Bungals gave us the first pick for Brad Hoover, Carson Palmer is not going to lead a team to a superbowl for several years. Who there is out there that would be able to do this, I don't know.

with that logic we pick up Vinny Testaverde and he'll be our next savior or Jason Garrett or Shane Matthews or OH OH I know Jeff Lewis returns to lead us to the big dance...

    .... X...

    Try again.

Unless they fell to us @ 9, Palmer or Leftwich, in my opinion, ain't worth the trade up. Thelt's got a point, here. Magnus mentioned Delhomme and I don't know if that's still a possibility, but he looked pretty good in relief of Brooks in NO.

I really think we need a Palmer or Leftwich (not necessarily these guys, but a high draft pick) sitting on the bench for a while, no matter what veteran journeyman we can find. Hell, might as well stick with Peete for 2 years, and let a youngster hold the clipboard for a while. Gannon is a product of Brown, Rice, and Garner being his weapons and a coach who calls 40-50 pass plays a game. It's not "just" Gannon. I think we could win with a young smart QB who doesn't make stupid mistakes...we did it with Collins in 96 and I believe this defense is better or at least will be better. And I would wager a lot that Palmer/Leftwich/Ragone are all more mature than Collins was at the same stage...

just my opinion though, what do I know...

edit: I'm not condoning trading up to get one of those 2 guys, but surely we can get a Boller/Ragone/Simms/Grossman/Dorsey somehow...

At the same time, I could also argue that several of the best QBs in the game were drafted and developed by the teams that still have them. I'll take a McNabb or McNair over Brad Johnson any day...same goes for Peyton Manning and Chad Pennington. Like someone said, for every Gannon or Johnson, you've got 10 Rodney Peetes or Steve Bonos.

The end result is that it's rare that a QB sprout wings and claw grips and carry you to a championship and that's about what you're asking him to do. The end result is that there aren't but so many championship level QBs, and those players rarely have that level of play and support cast their entire careers. It's a crap shoot, you go out and find the guy who fits you best, and you run with it. That's all you can do. There are no formulas, no rules, you just do what's in your best interests. And that's for damn sure not easy to figure.

Read somewhere that Doug Johnson, Michael Vicks's backup, is going to be a free-agent. Can anyone verify this? He sure looked good in relief last year. Pair him with Boller in the second round (don't know if we're that lucky), and I for one would be happy.
