I think there is a lot of reason to be concerned about Weinke. He has not shown the kind of improvement you would hope for, most concerning is that he is making many of the same mistakes he made last year. However, one mitigating factor is that we do not have a legitimate #2 receiver. Everyone can get excited about Steve Smith's big play potential, but in reality, he has a hard time getting open against starting DB's. If you remember, most scouts only considered his chances of making it on any NFL club as a receiver as marginal...his selling point was that he was so explosive as a return man. So while Weinke has not progressed as much as we all hoped (at least so far), it is unfair to mark him as the goat in the passing game.

As for Fasani, he was a guy I liked a lot in college. I saw sleeper written all over him. Early in his career at Stanford, he was behind NFL caliber QB's, then, when he finally got his shot, he had some injuries that kept him off the field and hurt his development. But whenever I saw him, I had no question he has the tools to be a very good NFL starting QB. However, as a result of limited time on the field, he is somewhat raw. What we have seen in the pre-season is his raw ability, but we also have seen some of the inconsistency that comes from being inexperienced.

As for his completion percentage during the pre-season, IMO that is a non-issue. Overall, he has been very accurate, however, he has had to throw the ball away several times under heavy pressure when his receivers couldn't get open, not to mention he has also had a number of drops (as has Weinke...another mitigating factor). In fact, I think he has shown very good judgement on when to stay in the pocket, when to scramble, and when to throw the ball away. And based on the immediacy of most of his rollouts, I would say they are called plays. One key point that I really like is that when he does scramble, he is thinking pass first. He runs with his head up, scanning the field looking for someone to get open...unless there is a ton of open space for him to run.

With all of that said, I don't think we can even begin to consider the possibility of starting Fasani until at least after the 8th game...and then only if Weinke is worse than awful (which I think unlikely) and the season is basically already lost. Fasani needs time to let his game develop. He is very talented, but forcing him out there too early would likely stunt his growth. I think it is also way too early to give up on Weinke. If I remember right, he is due a hefty bonus if he is on the opening day roster on his 3rd year (I'm not 100% sure about this, but I'm pretty sure). So, he has this season to prove he should be our starting QB, otherwise, we will look elsewhere next off-season...whether that is Fasani, a FA, or someone in the draft. Personally, if we do have another bad year, I really want a big playmaking receiver who has the ability to take over a game (i.e. Roy Williams). So, lets hope that either Weinke improves as the season goes on, or Fasani matures quickly.

That's the thing that bothers me. It's a fatal flaw. One of the announcers mentioned it a couple of times last week so I looked for it this week and, sure enough, on every pass play Weinke seemed to focus on just one reciever. Weinke is 30 and a second year starter. If he doesn't have a skill as basic as looking off recieversby now, he may never have it.
I agree with the notion that it's too soon to start Fasani, but I'm a great deal more concered about our quarterback position than I was three weeks ago. I'd like to see Fasani move to #2 sooner rather than later or claim a more capable back up than Peete off waivers.

Brett Favre to be cut today!

He has thrown 4 interceptions in his first 3 PRESEASON games and was PULLED during the Titans game after two series! Then third stringer Craig Nail saved the day with a heroic come from behind win against the mighty 3rd string Titans. Stay tuned for more developments!

If you read this shit would you believe it?

It sounds alot like the Fasani/Weinke situation. Hell it sounds like about every team in the league. Wait a minute and I will find another team with a 3rd string savior....

Trent Green is on the trading block!

After a dismal 5 interception preseason 3rd or 4th stringer Todd Collins will be taking over the starting position, after showing he has what it takes. This 3rd string reincarnation of Joe Montana completed 55% and threw 3 tds. He will be Dick Vermeils new petting boy!.........

    Tom Brady is BENCHED!

Tom Brady has not llived up to his superbowl glory. With 3 interceptions and a QB rating of 76, Tom will be riding the pine. Looks like Brock Huard is the real deal in New England. He has a 109 QB rating and is unstoppable! Kraft is said to have named a cheese after Huard. ...

Griese has been cleaned up with 409 spray.

Griese has thrown 2 ints during the preseason and is no longer Shanahan's boy! Young and upcoming Steve Beuerlein has become Shanahan's new biatch. Beuerlein strapped on his depends during the preseason and threw for 1 td and landed a QB rating of 86. Big changes in store for the Denver Ponies!.....

    Thanks, Cube.

MVM said:It does bother me that Weinke locked in on Muhammad. It does bother me that he made last year's mistake - throwing one high like it got away from him. That does make me a little mad.

I watched this again last night at midnight. Stayed up to watch both of Weinke's series. The picked off ball wasn't thrown all that high, and it seems, from watching it again, that the defender made a hell of a play.

Wound up it wasn't as bad as i remember. The playcalling was good - and Weinke threw 2 off target balls out of 3. That's unusual for Weinke, in practice or preseaon. 9 times out of 10, Weinke hits that ball to Byrd, and we've got a first down and we've stretched the defense some. If we'd had more time, I think Weinke would have hit it.

We had 2 turnovers on 2 plays. Weinke's pick, and then Smith's fumble. Our defense played very well. They hit one deep ball where Grant just barely let it slip through, and their receiver made a hell of a play holding on to Minter's hit. But we kept them from getting 7. All night.

All preseason, All preseason, our first string defense gave up 2 TDs.

A little note - I had alot of fun watching Nathan Black make some plays. I hope we keep him around, but I don't know where he'd fit.

  8. Cube, when Weinke does anything even remotely similar to Favre, Green or Brady, it would be a fall from grace if he was replaced.

Right now, if Weinke isn't starting, it'll be about as "major" as Lewis getting pulled for Weinke last year...

In regard to Fasani "not staying in the pocket" - maybe if there was one there, he'd stay in it. The kid keeps his head up when he's mobile, he's twice the athlete Weinke is, and he's brought teams back.

I throw better passes that the wounded duck Chris let go in the flat. I'll support him if he's the starter (and doesn't continue to put the D further behind"...

If Fasani looks like an advanced college QB, what does that make Weinke right now?

If Weinke hits Byrd or whomever 9 out of 10 times why did we when 1 game last year? I am not necessarily saying Fasani should start right now. However, can we win with Weinke? If we cant, which I dont think we can based on what I have seen, I would rather watch Fasani play.

    Based on what you've SEEN!

Weinke played two series against the Browns. Some of the BEST Qbs in the league's numbers are worse than Weinke's in the PRESEASON. I'm not comparing Weinke to other Qb's, I'm comparing the idiotic logic that is going on in Carolina. There are numerous NFL teams where the starting Qb's numbers are not as good as the 3rd strings! That doesn't mean you start a first year college kid that hasn't played but two years Qb in college. We already suffered through Weinke's learning curve last year. If he doesn't progress this season, then we address the Qb issue. But the fact is, IT IS PRESEASON!

By the way, the Rams are 1-3 in the PRESEASON....I think the dynasty is over.
