proxy server

Hello all,
Does anyone out there know a good proxy server that I can use. there is a 17 year old in the house and I want to ensure that he is not going to all of those naughty sites that he shouldnt be going to. preferrably one that tracks the sites he goes to.

well I guess the fact that there is noresponse that means that no one has any ideas on a good proxy server. oh well its all good.

A lot of routers let you block sites or track usage.
There are some free proxy servers that I don't use and therefore can't talk about.
Microsoft's ISA Server is FANTASTIC at being a user-based and/or machine-based proxy. And you can get plug-ins that auto-block/notify you of access attempts to a constantly updated list of "bad" sites, which can take a lot of forms. Since this isn't done at the computer being used, but at the proxy, it is very hard to defeat. Except, of course, by any half-way intelligent kid just going to a coffee shop, stealing the wireless net of a neighbor, using a friends computer, using a library, etc.

Given that, just raise your kid right. In a year they'll be going to college anyway...

 

I have used a program called Privoxy which allows you to black list sites and review the sites that were visited. This proxy sever works best if you can put the program on a diffrent machine then the one you are trying to monitor. After you set it up just set Internet explorer to use the other computers IP address and port to go out to the internet and then you can block and monitor. It may also be good to set up user accounts for everyone using that computer and not give everyone admin rights.

 

This brings up an important point, albeit less important than "trust your 17 year old, cuz you can't stop/monitor them anyway": if you want real security/monitoring, you MUST make the proxy MANDATORY to get on the internet. In other words, it should be the gateway to the internet, the router can't/won't talk to any other machine. Otherwise a decently-intelligent kid will simply disable the use of the proxy once the first site is blocked...

 

I agree with the whole raising your kids right and trusting them, the situation I am in is that the 17 year old is my girlfriends son. I had no hand in raising him. his father left when he was 8 and his mother raised him alone. she did a good job raising him but because he had no father figure in his life he stil has some issues. I dont have aproblem with people watching porn by any means, I just dont want it done in my house by a 17 year old.
