Clemson deletes objectionable material from Web sites

    By PETE IACOBELLI
    Associated Press
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips spoke by phone to an official at his old school, Oklahoma State.
“Remember,” Phillips said before hanging up, “check your Web sites.”
Phillips’ warning came after objectionable material, including some pornographic pictures, were found on the online pages of Tiger football players. The pages were on the university’s server. Phillips and coach Tommy Bowden said the offending material was deleted.
“Some of that stuff was bad,” Phillips said in his office Tuesday. “There’s nothing redeeming about it.”
Tailback Yusef Kelly and tight end Ben Hall had pornographic pictures stores on their university “ePortfolios,” the name the university gives to its students home pages, The (Columbia) State reported.
Athletic spokesman Tim Bourret said neither player knew how the material got onto the sites.
“My players were as equally shocked as I was,” Bowden said. “Some of those Web sites that they last recalled were handed in as class projects and since then untouched for two or three years.”
The coach said that made it difficult to discipline players.
Phillips took a harder line. He said the school would continue to look into how this happened. Any punishments, he said, would be handled internally. He sent memos to all Clemson coaches to have their players review their Web pages and make sure everything adhered to the university’s guidelines.
“No matter how you were raised, if you’re doing something that would embarrass your family you need to stop doing it,” Phillips said.
In the future, Phillips said if objectionable material is found in Web sites – no matter who placed it there – the individual whose home page it’s on would be responsible. “We’re not going to get into a ’he said, she said’ with this,” Phillips said.
Other sites, including those of Jamaal Fudge and Eric Sampson, had pictures of scantily clad women.
Bowden said the players understand they have an obligation to represent Clemson in a “class manner. But under the circumstances, talking with the players, they hadn’t seen these Web sites. Some of them wouldn’t know how to get back on them.”
Bowden spoke with players Monday about the Web pages. He told them they had better check their sites because they’d be accountable for what’s there. Pictures posted should be of “clothed women. I didn’t know how else to put it,” Bowden said. “Pants and tops.”
Fudge, a sophomore safety, said he had a link on his home page of a video of a pit bull mauling a pig. Fudge said it was for a class. He didn’t feel embarrassed about it, “just awkward that someone would bring it up.”
Offensive lineman Gregory Walker says the players walk the line between poking fun at offending teammates like Kelly and Hall, and worrying if their Web page is next.
“When you think about Web pages and the freedom that’s provided with Clemson, you can click on anybody’s Web page and all you have to do is go to the source,” Walker said. “Anybody that’s taken Computer Science 120 can basically get in there and put anything on there.”
Walker, a graduate student, didn’t know the whole story of his teammates online sites. But he checked his own page Monday. “It’s no longer in existence,” he said.
