Roy Williams comments on Doherty situation
    By Ben Sherman, Inside Carolina
    Date: Apr 1, 2003

Kansas head coach Roy Williams, who has been a rumored candidate for the North Carolina job again, fielded a question at his 3 p.m. Final Four press conference about the reported UNC vacancy.

(Paraphrased reporter question) Reports out of Chapel Hill are that Matt Doherty is in trouble and some reports today say he's been fired. What do you know about that?

"Just what you just told me then I got a call 10-15 minutes ago somebody said the same thing. That's all I know.

"There is one other thing I know - this is a very satisfying, exciting time for me and my players and the University of Kansas and our basketball program. I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this week and I'm not going to allow anybody bother me with any junk if it doesn't have anything to do with Kansas basketball, my players, great places to eat or rivers to spit in.

"I'm not messing with anything else. This is too exciting a time for me and our kids and our program. And that's the extent of my conversation about any other job, whether it's North Carlina or anybody."

They shouldn't be going well, Kansas is in the final 4.

I hope 'ol Roy does pick up and come back here if Doherty is getting the boot. I feel bad for Matt and think they should have given him one more year, but if not Roy can come back and then they'll be in the "rebuilding phase" for 4 more years. ;) :p

Kinda worried about Roy coming here there are positives and minus arguing both

Why Roy might come to UNC:
    - His dream job... he's said it in the past
    - He has a house near here
    - Still very close with Dean Smith
    - His kids live in Chapel Hill
    - He doesn't like his AD
    - The recruiting class he is said to favor is graduating
    - He was considering going to UCLA... if he'll consider UCLA he'll SURE as hell consider UNC

    Why Roy turns down UNC:
    - Dick Baddour
    - He's very close with Matt Doherty and has publicly stated he doesn't think Doherty being fired is right.
    - He's happy at Kansas

Basically if Roy leaves Kansas he comes to UNC... they have that much pull on him... if he doesn't he stays at Kansas... the problem is the distraction this is causing him now... it may sour him on the school before the Final 4 ends and cause him to stay away... I hope not because he'd be the best fit here.

I think if Roy wins the NCAA, it will eleminate the guilt he would have for leaving while at the same time removing a monkey off his back before he gets to Chapel Hill.

    You heard it hear first.

    Kansas wins - Roy goes

    Kansas loses - Roy stays

That's interesting, Sandman. Haven't thought of that before. It makes sense though.

If he wins, I question his motivation to leave. I love Roy as coach at UNC, but I'm not sure it will work out like everyone thinks it will. He's a hell of a coach, but why would a coach leave a team right after a championship. And I think he'll win it, too.

To someonone's point above. I was not aware of th AD problem at Kansas. Oddly enough I think there will be less pressure on him now at UNC than there was back when Do was hired. In the first situation he would have been coming in to "maintain" the Carolina tradition. Now he has a chance to build a "new" tradition since Do managed to fuck everything up...
