To get an idea about our off-season available vet shortlists I’d appreciate any input.

    Starting with WR –

For the sake of argument let’s assume that we just get one new veteran WR. We are likely to draft one or two and we “should” be active in the market at other positions like QB, OL, and possibly RB and CB so we aren’t likely to shoot our load in any one position IMO.

Pick one that seems likely to you (and why) OR, just list any that would be good signings IYO.

Many of these are (like RB Stephen Davis) projected to be cut. Here’s my own (opinionated of course) list of possibilities:

David Boston Ari - Out of our price range and wouldn’t pick come to Carolina anyway.
Peerless Price Buf – (see David Boston)
Laveranues Coles NYJ – Would be a great pickup but unfortunately he is VERY likely to stay.
Raghib Ismail Dal - Bryant and a 4 mil cap break should push Ismail out the door. He’s still plenty fast and talented.
Darrell Jackson Sea – Talented complete receiver but inconsistent and too pricey.
Ike Hilliard NYG – Shifty fast and fearless, but this oft-injured rebel is apparently a risk to team chemistry and the IR list.
Derrius Thompson Was – (See Laveranues Coles)
Kevin Dyson Ten – A complete WR and one of my favs but recent hammy injury was severe. Injury risk now?
James Williams Sea – A 6th round surprise who's fading. Scheduled to be paid 2 mil in ’03
Oronde Gadsden Mia – A solid possession guy but there is a knock on him as a bad locker room influence.
Brandon Stokley Bal – Top-drawer speed and talent . . . middle-drawer effort and production.
Jermaine Lewis Hou – (see Brandon Stokley)
Dante Hall KC – (RFA) Since having a TO-like game late in the year they should re-sign him but if they don’t he’s interesting.
Eddie Kennison KC - Deep speed as well as solid hands but 4 teams (and counting) in 7 years raises the red flag.
Wayne Chrebet NYJ – Teammates staff and fans all love him and I imagine they will find a way to keep him. If not, he could help us IMO.
Ricky Proehl StL – (see Wayne Chrebet)
Bobby Shaw Jac - Was interested at one time . . . now indifferent.
    Patrick Johnson Jac – ditto
    Kevin Lockett Jac – ditto
Karsten Bailey GB – (RFA) Worth a look if they don’t re-sign this potential late bloomer.
Terance Mathis Pit – Sitting on a good pair of hands and won’t be staying but we already have a very similar guy in Steve Smith.
Danny Farmer Cin – (RFA) Not flashy but he is one of those dependable 3rd and 10 go-to types that the Bungals didn’t utilize well.
Shawn Jefferson Atl – A disappointing year sends this overpriced and aging ex-stud to pasture.
Brian Finneran Atl – Big tough sure handed go-to guy but he will likely be re-signed.
Darrin Chiaverini Atl – Reminds folks of Jeffers! Either he or Gaylor will be the odd man out (I hope it’s him).
Trevor Gaylor Atl – (RFA) Shifty deep threat but inconsistent. Probably won’t be re-signed.
(Hmmm? Gee, Do ya think that the Falcons might be drafting a WR in the 1st round?)

    > Let me know if I made any glaring errors, and I’m sure I've omitted a few interesting possibilities.

  2. there's probably a few players that can be added to that list that aren't "free agents" but their cap numbers are too high and will be cut for the purposes or clearing cap room.

to hell with Stokely. I don't like players who don't at least try to hustle.

Oh and welcome Thelt, you're about to post.

I think it is vital that we get a better QB. Our current receivers would look a lot better with a good QB. That being said we need to add atleast one starting quality receiver. Once you get past Moose and Smith there is not much there. I had hoped Bright would come on but that seems unlikely now. I would just as soon draft a guy as to bring one in from free agency. You can get a good receiver in the second or third round.
