Heading into training camp, we hear that while Terry Cousin appears to have a fairly secure hold on one of the Panthers' starting CB slots, the other one is totally up for grabs among an assortment of challengers including DeRon Jenkins, Reggie Howard, Fred Vinson and rookie Dante Wesley. Wesley, we're told, displayed some impressive playmaking ability in the team's June camp activity.

And The Way We Hear It...

It’s looking more and more like Steve Smith, a third-round pick in 2001 who quickly established himself as one of the league’s most explosive return specialists, will see a lot more action at wide receiver this season. With Patrick Jeffers — who we hear is still a very long way from being healthy enough to play regularly — and Isaac Byrd both nursing injuries, Smith saw considerable action on the first-team offense opposite Muhsin Muhammad in the Panthers’ minicamps and coaching sessions. Smith, who caught only 10 passes last season but led the team in yards per catch (15.4), has bulked up from 175 to 185 pounds. But we hear the verdict is still out as to whether he’ll be able to take the extra pounding that would come with more playing time.

Someone needs to tell ESPN that the NFL has realigned. Still got the Panthers in the West.

We have very little choice but to use SS to stretch the field. From what I know of Henning he likes those deep routes.

Math Major I saw a quote by an Engr. named Josiah Gibbs and it made me think of you. He said " A physicist must be at least half sane but there are no limits on a mathematician." Was he perceptive or what?

That's true, I guess. The problem when I was coming through college was that most of the Physics majors were doubling up in mathematics.

catch is right - we seem to have little choice - Jeffers' career may very well be over. Little experienced depth at WR, and the same at CB.

    Speaking of WR's...

15:51 PT: Jay Glazer reports for SportsLine.com although WR Isaac Byrd appears to be the early favorite to be the Carolina Panthers No. 2 WR, team sources say WR Steve Smith is quietly the favorite inside the organization. Byrd is expected to be fully recovered from his mini-camp foot injury in time for training camp.
