I've had limited neck movement for a number of months now. Basically, I couldn't turn my head more than halfway to the side. I've gotten used to it and the pain that goes with it, and I figured it's just part of the pain of getting back in shape with Jiu Jitsu and all of that. I figured I'll go for a deep tissue massage at some point and see if that helps, and if not maybe I'd check out a chiropractor sometime. Anyway, the other night I was rolling (almost full strength sparring) with a guy in my class and he was on my back trying to choke me from one side, but I had it defended well. Then, he quickly switched to trying to choke me from the other side and his arm came HARD across my face. My neck made a series of cracking sounds like you picture in a cartoon. I didn't tap out (ie give up), but it made such a noise that the guy stopped to see if I was OK. Lo and behold, my neck felt and still feels better than it has in months from his "adjustment". I have much better range of movement and only get pain when I'm turned almost all the way to one side. I'm thinking that a professional chiropractor may have been able to do even better.

I've had infinitely more relief from a good chiropractor than from any painkillers, muscle relaxers, or any other treatment. In combination with massage, it's incredible.

And it doesn't just ease pain in the area adjusted. It seems to release tension all over, & make everything feel better.

I got a good one a few doors down and he does the popping stuff. Gets on top of you and bends you every which way. Worked for me. :ylsuper:

Do you ever do any striking in that system? Do you ever practice take downs against someone who is trained in another martial art such as karate or tae kwon do? I have thought of taking a grappling style but as far as I know there is not one around where I live. There is an Akido school but it is not quite the same.

We learn both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (no striking, submission based grappling) and Muay Thai/Kickboxing skills, but we tend to keep them separate for rolling/sparring. We do 2 hour classes, the first hour is BJJ technique, then the second hour we roll live (starting from a standup position), usually for 3-5 minutes a pop, get a drink of water, start over. Most people in my class have experience in other disciplines. We have college level wrestlers, people who currently fight MMA, study Judo, Tae Kwan Do, and Karate, and some military, cops, bailbondsmen, and bouncers. The school is in Concord, but I think he has another one in Statesville.

I have trained in karate for years. I have done some grappling but it has been limited. I know that it will wear you out quick, 3-5 minutes is enough I am sure. There used to be a guy in Morganton who actually fought in an alternate match at the UFC. He was good with grappling and submissions.

If he fought in the actual UFC, even as an alternate, the guy must be a total beast. There's a ton of smaller shows around with guys who kick ass and can't get a UFC fight. I hope to get an MMA bout lined up within the next year or so if my striking skills continue to improve and I stay relatively injury free, but it'll be the a very low brow local type of thing, just so I can say I did it.

He fought in a match to determine who would be the alternate. He lost the fight to Guy Metzgers (one of Shamrock's students I think). He caught a nasty head butt and went down. It was probably eight or ten years ago when he did it, I think it was easier to get into it back then.

It would be cool to compete in one of those MMA tournaments but I am a long way from being in the kind of shape to do it. Based on what I have seen lately it pays to be balanced and equally good striking and grappling.
