I just saw this on the Observer site:

    Peppers could face suspension

2nd test for banned substances to determine if Panthers defensive end will miss games

Rookie defensive end Julius Peppers could become the second Carolina Panther this season to be suspended for a violation of the NFL's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.

Peppers has had an abnormal test result, a source close to the situation told The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. A second test on the same urine specimen will be performed in the next few days, the source said.

Carolina defensive tackle Brentson Buckner is serving a four-game suspension for violating the policy by taking a dietary supplement. Peppers, who leads the NFL with 10 sacks, would face the same punishment as Buckner if the second test showed a positive result for a banned substance. The source said Peppers denies taking any banned substance.

The league's policy was developed to abolish use of anabolic steroids and now includes numerous supplements. Many dietary and weight-loss substances and some cold medicines contain banned substances. All NFL teams tell their players what substances are banned and urge them to call their training staffs if they have questions.

If the second test shows a positive result for a banned substance, Peppers would have 10 days to appeal the automatic suspension. He also could provide the league a list of anything he has taken to see if a substance might have caused a false positive result.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney declined comment. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league does not comment on tests, suspensions or potential suspensions.

Peppers could not be reached for comment. A spokeswoman for Marvin Demoff, Peppers' agent, said her office had no knowledge of any problems with a test by Peppers.

    In reference to this:

<<Peppers has had an abnormal test result, a source close to the situation told The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. A second test on the same urine specimen will be performed in the next few days, the source said.>>>

I've worked in the medical field (laboratories) for a good many years and did drug screens for a good part of the time. There is such a thing as a false positive. It is interesting that Yasinkas uses the word "abnormal" because this is a term not often applied to drug screening. Results are either positive or negative as in a normal state these substance do not appear.

It could be that he is just an idiot or it could be that his source used the word. When drug testing a preliminary screening test is often used, which when positive we usually reported it as a "presumptive positive" and then further tested the sample using a more specific and often more time consuming testing procedure. Now if his source actually used the word it simply could mean that there was a substance present in the sample that caused some sort of reaction on the screening procedure and that the further testing is being performed.

For example when screening for amphetamines, a patient taking psuedoephedrine (the cold medicine) could have a positive screening for amphetamines. If you then test the sample using a GCMS you can differentiate which of the two substances it is causing the result. The reason they cross react is that they are both in the same chemical class, sympathomimetic amines.

  3. I'm sure he's thankful the Observer is letting him know he'll be re-tested in a few days.

beleive they use the same piss...they save it and test it again. If he were smart, he'd have used someone else's piss like most college and pro players use. A guy I went to HS with played for U of Michigan. He'd get someoene else's piss and put it in a bag and keep it in his armpit to keep it warm. it was hooked up with a tube that ran through his shirt down to his package, that way when he opened the clamp keeping the tube shut, it would look like he was pissing.

I'd like to know what the performing enhancing drugs are that are on the list. IMO, if you can buy them at BiLo, then 4 weeks is a little severe. It's not like he was driving through alleys off Wilkinson to get crack and real rhoids. If the stuff can be bought over the counter, it should be one game max.

  5. so how has Randy Moss not tested positive for pot?

Well the upside is he can't end up on I/R if he's suspended.

    Dear Panthers Players:

Best way to pass a piss test-

Make sure you have an appointment time, crucial!

Have someone who's never done anything more than eaten two candy bars back to back piss for you in a cup one day before the test.

Pour the piss in a NEW condom. Tie it TIGHT and I mean TIGHT.

Make sure you are wearing some tighty whities and make sure you have some fingernail clippers in your pocket.

Place the condom on top of your defroster on your car dash and set your heat at 90 degress. Keep it there for atleast 15 minutes. Then immediately do the following-

Place the condom under your nutt saq and walk in the testing center. Hold the condom over the toilet and clip the top off and pour it in the cup. FLUSH THE CONDOM!

If you can, clean the cup off in the sink, after capping it. Do not clean it off in cold water or hot water only warm. If the person asks why it is wet tell them you pissed on it and had to clean it off. That will explain the difference in temperature. Usually comes out around 90-94 degrees.

If you can't clean it off, make sure you get some piss on the outside of the cup and ask for a paper towel.

The examiners wear gloves, but expedite the urine much quicker this way.

I "KNOW" people that have pass monthly drug tests this way. I even know people on probation that have officers standing at the stall door while they do this. It all sounds the same whether your pissing it or pouring it from the condom.

Good luck NFL stars, I hope this has helped.

    Signed,

    Ben Johnson

Does the NFL provide a list of approved products? If they dont, they need to. If they do and a player uses an unapproved substance, then they deserve to be suspended.

Substances, yes, products, no. They tell them to read the labels. Problem is these are substances that are not regulated, and their derivatives can have different names.
