No he's confusing the restricted tenders for the tags for unrestricted FAs.

Besides the savings on the transition tag would be small (<$1,000,000) EDIT: The cost to transition peppers would be the same as franchising him, and leaves us open to a poison pill contract.

Transition tag is intriguing if it can be used in this situation. Gives us the right to match and set his market value. If another team overpays (Skins, Cowboys), we can let him go and wreck their finances.

ETA - forgot about Hutchinson and poison pill. I guess that kills that idea.

The seahawks transition tagged Steve Hutchinson and the Vikings got him to sign an offer sheet that said something like 'if the player is not the highest salaried offensive lineman on his team in the year 2006 the full value of his contract is guaranteed' the hawks were paying Walter Jones big money at the time and would've been on the hook for the full 49 million of Hutchinson's new contract (for comparison Haynesworth got 40 million guaranteed last year and this was 3 years ago and at offensive guard a less premium position) so they had to let him leave (they did get to keep the pretty highlight reels) and they never really replaced him.

In response the Seahawks signed Nate Burleson (a restricted free agent at the time) to a contract guaranteeing it's 49 million value if he played 5 games in the state of minnesota which minnesota declined to match and received a 3rd round pick for.

The amount of guaranteed money on each contract that the new teams had to pay without the 'poison pill guarantees' being triggered was 16 million for hutchinson and 5 million for Burleson.

After this there was a letter sent out the by league admonishing the teams for using the practice but no rule against it has been enacted and given the large amount of free agents this year that will need tender offers it could be back with a vengeance.

I did not realize the transition tag had the twenty percent raise built into it as well. That does not do us any good.

If he does not want to be here then let him walk. North Carolina has been very good to him but if he does not like it here then let him go.

There has always been something a bit off about Peppers. I am not sure what exactly but he almost seems like he is hiding something.

yeah! let's let him walk. Then in a year we can talk about how we could've had a first round pick but got spiteful.
