Option 1 doesn't work you can't trade people until the trading period begins, which will occur after pep's contract has expired.

Any team he's traded to can still extend him and save some money this year.

I would just as soon let him walk. We can be a good team without him. Johnson and Brown look ready to step up to me. We can probably help our team out in a lot of areas for the money we would save on Peppers. We could help out our special teams for one. We could lock up some good players like Davis, Kalil etc. We might even sign another good target for Moore.

$20 million is too much to pay for 2 spectacular games per year, 3 really good games and 11 mediocre ones.......

to me signing him for 20mil is insanity without a trade deal already set.

    Exactly right.
Johnson and Brown are plenty capable of replacing Pep.
Pep has talent, but in no way is worth 20 Mil.
We can lock up Davis, get a WR, more depth at DE.
We get a 3rd Rd Pick if we let him walk anyway.

Replacing is a big word - but I believe brown can be an impact player.

I did not know we'd get a 3rd if he walks. Interesting.

That's the best case scenerio if they don't sign any FAs. Clearly not the case if we get DE depth and a WR as he suggested.

I'm not sure that signing Delhomme is on Fox and Hurney's shoulders as a decision. I think this might have come straight from the ownership. I don't recall anyone ever saying if Richardson dictated it or not, so this is just my speculation ... and I hope it's the case, otherwise our front office is a lot less savvy than I give them credit for.

I don't know how they can let Peppers walk in this climate. Have you looked at who is going to be available via free agency if there is no CBA? Most of the good players will revert back to RFA, and there will be 3 different tags teams can place on players this season. The market is going to be extremely thin.

However, if the Panthers don't acquire a pick (or picks) for Peppers, they aren't on the hook for those salaries either, saving them a legit ~$20 million.

Keeping Fox (an not extending him), having all the coaches under contract for only another year, no real help via FA, no first round draft pick and potentially letting Peppers walk ... this could be the beginnings of a throw-away year for the Panthers.
