The NCAA reduced scholarship levels several years ago from 35 to 33 I believe. That and the migration of high schoolers to the NBA/underclassmen declaring early has left more spots on mid majors for talented players than in years past. Think about it, if UNC hadn't lost all of its players after last year, do you really think Mason would have won yesterday?

All true, and I think the smaller schools are able to lure kids with the "stay close to home" line. Somerville left Iowa for Bradley because he was home sick and I have noticed a number of other home town products staying close to home when they could go cross country. Fewer scholarships means more opportunity for walkon's as well.
Funny thing is, Iowa's top players seem to migrate elsewhere outside of a select few. A few locals have ended up at UNC-Willmington, Arizona, Kansas and numerous mid-majors.
