Panthers sign Ryan Kalil to six-year deal, making him NFL's highest-paid center

Sarcasm aside, yes it does look like these guys might be overpaid, but aside from DeAngelo, they will all be in their prime 3-4 years from now, and while the new CBA won't allow for massive wage inflation, by then Beason, Kalil, Johnson won't be in the top 5 for their position, maybe not even top 10.

 

Ugh. It annoys me how Panthers fans will so gleefully pretend to be stupid and insist that the team has done something brilliant instead of idiotic. Again, the Panthers entered free agency with the second most cap room of any team. They leave free agency having used all of that cap room to re-sign a 2-14 roster over the long-term, while adding Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, and Olindo Mare. I'm guessing that those three aren't enough to go from 2-14 to 14-2. Meanwhile other teams around the NFL signed their free agents at reasonable prices, with the only other team coming near Carolina's idiocy being Jacksonville. The Panthers already have more counting against the 2012 and 2013 caps than any other team in the league, and that's while just adding Newton, Olsen, and Mare to a 2-14 roster.

Jesus Christ, people. Pretending that was a good idea won't magically make it so. The fanbase has to pressure Richardson to fire Hurney and stop the team from repeating the same mistakes that got this organization in salary cap hell before. We've all seen this movie already, and it has a shitty ending.

Yes, you're supposed to do that. You're also supposed to write the team directly. You're also not supposed to post fairy-dust bullshit around the internet about how the Panthers made good moves simply because you wish they had. That's how things change, not my sitting around with a thumb up your ass sending out positive energy that the 2-14 roster will suddenly become All-Pros.

If you forget that we went 2-14 last year and just look at each player we have signed whether he was with us last year or not then it probably looks better. We may have overpaid for some of them but they were all guys who were going to get a good sized contract somewhere if we did not keep them.

I still see a pretty solid roster with big question marks at QB. They are learning a new system on both sides of the ball and some of the best guys have yet to play so I choose not to panic over an ugly preseason loss.

 

well, of course it looks better then. If anyone had paid a premium for the best end and best RB on the market, and they weren't 2-14 last year, people would be calling them contenders. They wouldn't be worried about paying a premium.

The reason it's being said "bringing back a 2-14 team" is because it's the worst possible light to paint the team in. There are no alternatives to that option, either you think they were stupid to do that, or you're stupid for thinking that.

Realistically, would I have done everything they did? No. Does that make it stupid? No. I can accept differences in logic, and while (for instance) it would've been nice to have had a Deangelo Williams level player somewhere else, I understand keeping him.

 

The only name you brought up was Cullen Jenkins, and that was about him saying he didn't want to go to Cincinnati. He never said anything about not wanting to come here. Moreover, the idea that every single free agent available would have turned down offers from Carolina is precisely why I kept pointing out your dishonesty. You don't believe that's true, you just pretend that it is because you're a complete homer who will faithfully support everything the team does. You've always been that way. You defended Seifert against me and you were wrong. You defended Delhomme against me and you were wrong. You know that Hurney has done a bad job, but you pretend otherwise because you feel like it's your job as a fan to lie about the team.

God damn it, Thelt. You have already been told that this is not true. No one offered anywhere near what the Panthers did for Charles Johnson or DeAngelo Williams. We know this for a fact. Not opinion, not guesswork, it's fact. I also have a very hard time believing that anyone was going to offer anywhere near that much for Thomas Davis next off-season.

Again, the Panthers have a history of this. Was anyone going to give Jake Delhomme as much as Hurney did? Of course not. Was anyone going to give Chris Gamble as much money as Hurney did? Of course not. You're not new to being a Panthers fan, so why do you pretend like this hasn't all happened before?

• I love DeAngelo Williams, but he's a 28 year old running back (a position that almost always declines sharply around age 30) who hasn't played a full season since 2008. Hurney gave him more than twice as much as Ahmad Bradshaw got from the Giants, who happens to be three years younger. DW is now one of the highest paid running backs in the NFL.

• I'm also hopeful about Charles Johnson, but Hurney gave him more than twice as much as Ray Edwards got from the Falcons. I realize you didn't know who Edwards was, but he has the same number of sacks the last two seasons as Johnson. Charles Johnson had a sack, hit, or hurry on 16.8% of his pass rushes in 2010. Ray Edwards had a sack, hit, or hurry on 16.6% of his. That's a 0.2% difference that cost the team an extra $42-46 million, depending upon the source.

• And then to top off the lunacy, Hurney gave a guy coming off of two consecutive knee surgeries a 7 million dollar signing bonus, and an 8 million dollar roster bonus. The total value of Thomas Davis' contract is $35.5 million over five seasons. And again, that's for a guy who has missed each of the last two seasons with torn ACLs.

Again, we've covered your unrealistic views about this roster many times. It's not a playoff caliber team even with a better QB. The defensive line has major questions, the offensive line was bad last season and has looked bad again so far in the preseason, there are major question marks at receiver, and the secondary is weak as well. Linebacker and running back are the only two strong spots on the roster. If you could magically put Peyton Manning on this team tomorrow, I doubt they would make the playoffs.

It's not about the preseason loss, it's about the future of the team. The Panthers are already fucked in regards to cap space for 2012 and 2013. This is the team. Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, and Olindo Mare will have be awesome for this team, because there isn't enough room under the cap to bring in significant talent from outside. This is it.
