    From the AP:
Panthers sign veteran cornerback Steve Israel

    .c The Associated Press

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The Carolina Panthers signed journeyman cornerback Steve Israel to a one-year contract Thursday.

A veteran of nine NFL seasons, Israel has started 39 games and played in 101 with five interceptions and four sacks.

This will be the fifth NFL team Israel has played for and his third in the last four years. He played eight games last season for the New Orleans Saints after sitting out the 2000 season with a broken ankle.

He's also played for the New England Patriots (1997-99), San Francisco 49ers (1995-96) and St. Louis Rams (1992-94).

To make room on the roster, the Panthers waived injured cornerback Deveron Harper, who has missed almost all of training camp with a hamstring injury.

The Panthers also signed 6-foot-8, 310-pound defensive tackle Terrance Simmons, recently cut by the Washington Redskins. They waived-injured defensive tackle Darian Tate.

I remember seeing his name on a jersey....
I'm sorry, maybe I'm ignorant of these things, but he's played nine seasons and only has five INTs? I know that's not the only measure of a CB, but are we that desperate back there?

We just added ANOTHER nickleback to the package!

Isreal did play well as a Patriot and wasn't bad as a Saint, that's all I remember of him really. He at least brings some experience, if nothing else. If I remember correctly, he isn't a guy that gambles alot, he pretty much plays the WR w/o reading the QB.

He's just another to compete - and he happens to be a veteran.

Only signed him b/c they released Harper......

    Interesting, though.

Also - Hitchcock is still out there. You'd think if they were really panicky, they'd grab him.

EDIT - seems like they might expect more:

Interesting that Harper got released. Looks like this coaching staff has no tolerance for injury. Israel is a backup with experience. Not a bad move.

More of go with who you know. I guess the more guys you have that know your system, the more they can help the other guys learn it and buy in to it.

    Hitchcock? Uh, no thanks.
