Panthers' Hayes to miss up to six weeks with broken clavicle

    June 14, 2004
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Wide receiver Donald Hayes will miss four to six weeks after fracturing his shoulder last week at the Carolina Panthers' minicamp.

Coach John Fox said he expected Hayes to return for the start of training camp, slated to begin July 30.

Hayes felt pain in his shoulder in the final practice last week. Tests over the weekend revealed a fracture.

Hayes is competing for the fifth receiver spot behind starters Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad; Ricky Proehl and rookie Keary Colbert.

    Or Hankton.

Makes me wonder what Proehl's plans are. Think he'd bail if he were number 4 on the chart, behind Colbert, which it appears he'll be?

Don't think Proehl's going anywhere, least wise until next year. You gonna be at practice any this week?

I don't think he'll bail if he knows he got beat out, and he's been around enough to know that a backup is always one play from being a starter. (I think) Proehl will at least start out as the #3, he's got the mojo going with Jake and they'll want to keep Jake as comfortable as possible, especially early. Williamson sure did have some nice things to say about Colbert though. And it would be great to have enough depth that Proehl is the #4 guy.

Too bad Carter is so fragile, we probably had him targeted as #3-4 guy for '05.

For some reason I never thought Carter would be anything this year, but he'd be a solid #3 next year... just some weird gut feeling I've had since we drafted him... the fact that he got hurt didn't really bother me as I never expected anything this year.

We signed some else to take Hayes' spot. I got part of this from a post on Charlotte.com--I didn't see a link where this person had got it from and I tried looking on other sports websites to find this little part, but none of them had this part:

As a replacement for Hayes, the Panthers signed wide receiver Scott McCready, who led NFL Europe with 59 receptions this past season. He previously spent time with the New England Patriots but was cut twice.

    I found a link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/06/14/bc.fbn.panthers.hayes.ap/index.html
