here's the observer article. its a good sign

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - It's a rite of the Carolina Panthers' training camp: The defensive linemen tape the rookies to a goal post.

Only one rookie didn't think it was very funny and got into a fight with veteran Brentson Buckner after Tuesday's practice.

Derrick Strong, an undrafted rookie defensive end from Illinois, threw a punch at Buckner after breaking free from the goalpost after practice.

It wasn't the only incident as tempers flared at training camp.

Wide receiver Steve Smith spent most of practice jawing with cornerback Hank Poteat, and the two got into several shoving matches before the session was over.

"It is a physical game and it gets testy at times," coach John Fox said. "When you are operating at a high level and are pushing at a high level, sometimes that happens."

The sparring between Smith and Poteat went on so long, Fox at one point grabbed each around the shoulder for a lecture.

"It is like running a family," he said. "Sometimes you have disagreements and you talk about it."

But as he was downplaying the on-field argument in his daily media briefing, another one was breaking out 20 yards away.

Every year, the linemen play little practical jokes on the rookies as camp winds down. As Buckner and others began taping the younger linemen to the goalpost, it looked as if they were also preparing to dump Gatorade on them.

At one point, Strong apparently broke free and got into a fight with Buckner that was quickly broken up. Members of the coaching staff walked Strong back onto the field to calm him down, but Buckner could be heard yelling "You still have to come back to the locker room."

When Fox finished his media briefing, he then went onto the field to talk to Strong.

Neither Strong or Buckner would comment after, and the rest of the defensive linemen also refused to answer questions.

"Everybody gets taped up, I got taped up," offered Julius Peppers, the No. 2 overall pick in 2002 and the highest paid player in franchise history. "I took it."

Smith, who was called for a personal foul in practice for grabbing Poteat's face mask, said tempers are short at this time of training camp.

"It's getting old, guys are ready to get out of here and go home and sleep in their own beds and be with their family," he said. "Things happen."

yep, that's the way to make it on the team, attack the team leader, the guy that gives the motivational speeches on the field before the game. maybe they'll be best friends now.

A guy that played on the Illinois D last year should just be happy to have a job that doesn't involve burger flipping.

If Strong's around next year he'll probably be the first mofo to get the tape out. :teeth: Buck, lol, that's some funny shit.

I would not put up with that shit either. Fox should not be allowing Buckner or anyone else to haze the rookies. These guys are supposed to be professionals not frat boys, especially Buckner he is in his thirties now.

I heard it wasn't so much the taping to the goal post, but the pissing on him afterwards, that ticked him off.

    Some people?
