I wanted better depth LAST YEAR. I'd like that this year, too - Foster and Goings you can expect to start the season, but you need another back to make the squad if Davis doesn't. But he won't get cut. At worst, that's a reactionary way to eat cap money before you see what he has left.

Bring back Maddox or Bennett to camp, but bring someone better, too. I have no idea why we were carrying only four backs in camp from day one, I thought that was stupid. And guess what? Not to say it was totally related, but we were still left without our top 2 backs by the bye week.

    No.
And I'm allright with Foster/Goings as a next-best case scenario, the best being Davis also healthy (it's foolish to count him out). We do need more depth, though. We kill backs.

    another rb

Why don;t we try to get Reuben Droughns. He wants out of Denver. If we coulod get him fro a 3rd or 4th rounder I would do it.

It's a better argument than the Travis Henry one, but it's still taking a back out of a situation he was in, to put him right in the same situation. Granted, it's a stretch to see Droughns be a fulltime back for all eternity anyway, but it's a harder sell with three guys on the roster who have each had multiple 30-carry games in a row. But that's not our problem, coming up with a 3rd for a back is, when you can get a young back who'll cost less. If all goes right, the rook would start the season inactive, or potentially an active 3rd stringer if one of our 3 doesn't start the season healthy; rooks are cheap. Even for the same 3rd round pick, you have the built-in bonus of having the guy under exclusive rights for four years.

I know, ideally, Henning wants some kind of feature back orgy.

Truthfully, I would spend a little more of my time and resources addressing a deeper and better offensive line than I would on more running backs.

I am very pleased with Goings. I don't think that's a flash in the pan kind of deal. He is what he is--a good, hard runner who finds a hole and hits it hard. Doesn't dance. Doesn't fumble a whole lot.

Foster stayed healthy the entire 2003 season. Granted, he only got about 8-16 touches a game, but damn he looked good doing it. The collarbone injury is a freak injury that will happen from time to time. Does not reflect his toughness or long-term sustainablity as a feature back, IMHO.

I'm thinkin' Davis will be our Bettis, starting about the middle of 2005. Don't think he will be active in camp. I think he will be PUP'd, and will work back in to the rota around mid-November. Then, we use him down the stretch (6-12 touches a game) to wear defenses down.

    Something I just realized

I think that most recent press release means next to nothing.

The way that whatever mouthpiece for this Panthers rations out wafer thin slices of info it’s really impossible to come to any clear conclusions over something like this. I think the first truthful indicator we will actually get is whether they pursue a FA RB or draft one in April. On paper we have three very capable RBs and it would really seem pretty friggin odd if any team with three capable backs like Davis, Foster, and now Goings, went after a FA or drafted anything but maybe a second day 3rd down type back . . . UNLESS of course Davis was likely to be done. They are going to keep the cards close to the vest until the very last possible second, and then it will be too late to speculate because either the new guy will be getting interviewed or Davis will be getting interviewed very much after the fact.

I know I know . . . . MOON .. . but I just figgered out today that the offseason is no different from regular and preseason when it comes to "official" Panther info :shakehead
