As I watched that, I couldn't help but think of my senior year of HS. As a junior, we went 5-4 kind of like the Panthers 8-8 of 2000. We came into the preseason feeling pretty good about our chances and matched up well with the other teams in the conference based on size and experience.
We won our first game with good defence and a good performance by our senior QB who had never played QB before (like Weinke, our QB played primarily baseball and basketball, never really paid much attention to football). We won 15-0 with a passing based offense and had high hopes for the rest of the season...then it all fell apart! We finished 1-8 losing two leads in the fourth quarter and another in the third.
Maybe not much of a comparison, but there were some similarities. The next year, I think they went 3-6 and a few years after that qualified for the playoffs.
Granted your talking different personell with more regularity than you'd see in the NFL, but for me it's something to play off of emotionally as the season approaches.

I'll be happy with 5-11 this year, nothing less. However, I can see 7-9 as a reality based on the fact we lost 8 games by less than a TD.
Probably the best 1-15 team in the history of the league...not that you'd want to be known for that, but it could translate into something in 2002?
