I saw this on Profootballtalk.com. Apparently someone emailed them with this idea for overtime changes in the NFL next year.

In response to the question regarding the form that the NFL's new overtime system might take, one of our readers offered an intriguing suggestion -- get rid of the coin toss and make the team who tied the game kick off to start the sudden death period.

"This would force coaches to attempt to break ties rather than playing for overtime, or try to score touchdowns and two point conversions instead of field goals and extra points.
"In the rare cases of games still going to overtime, the team whose defense has been on the field for the most recent scoring drive would be able to rest, the momentum from the final scoring play wouldn't carry over to a win-the-coin-toss victory, thus the winner would be determined on the field rather than on the coin."

    What do y'all think?

I really like the college system... but I think any change that does not give the first team to score the game would be a welcome change for me...

I think the current system has not kept up with the game. Its a small change that would create more excitement for fans.

You're probably right. Same reason there won't be full-time paid officials next year, either.

I say leave it the way it is. If a team is good enough to win, then they should be good enough to make a stop if they start out on defense.

I like the way they do it in college!

But could you imagine 10 overtimes? Or a 100-94 score?

    Sounds exciting!

    No kickers
No field goals or extra points
2 point conversions only (after td)
Each team gets one series from the 25 yd. line, like college
That should tighten things up a bit.

(I really dont have a clue)

might have to restructure a few kickers contracts that may have "game winning" clauses in them, if there is such a thing...

I'd like to see 8 Min. Qtr's for OT. Allows enough time for each team to get a posession and yet they are still playing against the clock. Keep the coin flip to allow for a slight advantage.

That said, It will never happen. They'll come up w/ something that is TV friendly and the current system is closest to that in that first score and your back to regular programming.
