I ended up putting it on the credit card. My wife changed jobs and the new insurance has not kicked in yet. The Cobra would cost more than the medical bills. If I paid it up front I got a 30% discount on the cost from the hospital.

I may go to the envelope system. I think using a debit card is part of my problems, it is too easy to spend that way.

The envelope system really helped us. We just agreed that no money means no eating out. No money means no more Costco shopping, clothes, etc. BTW, a Dunn and Bradstreet study showed that people will spend more using plastic (Debit or Credit) than cash. I want to say it was like 12-18% more or somewhere along those lines.

A few years back when I did not have a debit card I seemed to be able to handle my money much better. I could pay off debts and save too. I am going to think hard about going back to that system.
