I just started my diet today. I'm at 235 right now, and would like to get as close to 190 as possible. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm giving the South Beach diet a try. I read the book, and it seems like it truly has some merit unlike most "diet plans".

A lot of stuff I've read recommends weighing in weekly rather than daily. Too many factors can affect your weight not only from day to day, but from hour to hour--water retention, etc. They say if you weigh in about once a week at the same general time of day, you get a more realistic assessment of how you're doing.

Plus, it's not quite so depressing :)

I can not help myself from weighing everyday. I try to not put too much stock in it though. I do try to weigh at the same time of the day. First thing in the morning works pretty well for me.

Same here. I'm trying to stop weighing myself everyday, though. It gets discouraging seeing that no weight has come off, or worse... that it is higher.

    losing over a long period

I weighed 338 in dec. 03. In june 05 I had lost down to 292. Both weights taken at same dr's office. I really did not make an all out effort to lose weight; maybe a "passive effort" would be a way to describe it, curbing my food intake and walking some.
Since June, I have picked up the pace quite a bit. My effort now includes walking for 45 - 60 minutes about 4 - 5 times / week. I don't let "things" get in the way of the walking; I feel really driven to do the walking & make it a high priority. As for diet, I would describe it as "modified" low carb.

I can't really say for sure that I feel much better physically (maybe a bit better), than in Dec. 03, but I definitely feel BETTER about myself emotionally & mentally. I feel like I am really making an effort, not just talking about it, & I am getting results although slowly it seems.

My goal is to weigh 250 lb. or less. I am about 6'2".

Any further advise from anyone? Thanks.

Good job and I believe in the walking also. :ylsuper: I am down in the 180's now and never thought I could get there. The walking and staying away from the saturated fats has got me there. No special diet or at least none with a name to it. Maybe a "low cholestrol" if you want to put a name to it. I'll know for sure by the doctors scales next week but I am around -60 since first of the year according to my scales.

I just finished the first week and am down 10 lbs to 225. I doubt the weight will continue to come off as rapidly, but it's a great place to start.
